    hey Guys,

I recently purchased the British Gas version of the CF-P2.

    Serial: CF-P2T1H017E

This version does not have Bluetooth or WiFi unfortunately. I didn't realise that there were models which did not support the above. It's just a shame is all as I really wanted the WiFi, any ideas where I could get the CF-P2T1FDF7E?

Hmm... Mine's a British Gas version, but the model number is CF-P2T1H017E+.
I guess the plus means bluetooth then. What does "Wireless Power" show?
I would have mine apart to look for upgrade slots for wifi, but it's got tri-wing screws.
Of course, you could always fabricate a docking system and use a supported USB wifi adaptor, but that kinda defeats the point of a mobile rugged phone.

Mine is actually very strange. The version of Windows Mobile is really limited it seems, I cannot even access my SD card with it through the Menu section.

Mine just says, Wireless Power and then Phone. There isn't anything else besides that

You seem to have the crippled firmware then... would you like a working firmware?

Do you have a working firmware?!?!? If so I would also like to have it... I can't do squat with mine! :(

    Mine is CF-P2T1HBF7E

    Thanks :)

    OK...
Hopefully, the file is attached. It's from a CF-P2T1H017E+ so I make no promises if it will work on other models but I would assume it would be semi-compatible. I've zipped it to stop the forum s/w having a bad mood, just unzip before you use it. You should only need the .baf file.

Firstly, push the reset with the stylus whilst holding power for about fiveish seconds. The device will do a full reinitialization. This may cure the crippled firmware.

If that hasn't cured it, pop the attached file onto the root directory of an SD card (eg F:/, replacing F with your card reader letter, or "/media/sdcard/" if you're a linuxer like me), and perform the reset procedure above. If the full reset has been performed correctly, after the screen alignment "panasonic backup" should appear. Hit OK or whatever and it *should* restore. Tested on my CF-P2.

If it doesn't pop up, then I might be able to send you a few files for the core backup engine. I don't think that this will be neccesary but I'm throwing in the offer, just in case. As long as you can pull up a file manager of some sort and access an SD then I may be able to help you reload the core backup engine files etc.

Hope it works and if you need any more help please ask!

I'm waiting for a P2 to arrive, it was described as a base model but I'll have to wait and see when it arrives.

Are there many different models/options and are they upgradeable in any way???

Mine was described as a base model - I think the "crippled firmware" issue may possibly be an inexperienced seller removing/deleting system components.
The most common one as far as I'm aware, is the CF-P2T1H017E+ model. There are many more models in existance however they don't seem as common.
    It's unlocked.
    GSM 850/1900 with GPRS
    Micro$$oft Windoze Mobile 2003SE (Ver 4.21.1088 Build 15077.3.0.0)
400Mhz Intel Xscale processor PXA270 (which I beleive is ARM?)
    64MB "memory"

Now allegedly British Gas had wifi on their CF-P2's but I haven't yet seen this. Saying that, there is however an option for "Panasonic Pegasus WLAN CF Module" so that may be a router to investigate. It might be a ZIF compactflash slot, if so, finding a compatible card may prove hard.

The about box lists a possible "expansion slot" however I doubt that this exists. If I had the correct tools I would perform a teardown however somebody decided to use a tri-wing instead of the T8 Torx screw.
A possible path of upgrade that is accessible without opening the device would be the USB host mode, but is a clumsy solution in my opinion, as it would require an external 5V power supply.

    Heyyy.... I've just noticed something!
On the BOTTOM of my phone, it reads "CF-P2T1H017E+"
Behind the BATTERY of the phone, says "CF-P2T1HBF7E"

Either I smell ninjawork, or I'm not that observant.

I presume that the phone would require a higher output power supply than is supplied by the 5 volt circuit in a computer USB socket???

In the mean time can you shoot me those extra files just in case?

As I said, it is clumsy in my opinion. It is possible that the phone has to be in car kit mode for use of the USB host (because of GPS) so you may have to sort out audio etc.
I beleive that the car kit just applies normal USB voltages/amperages but please don't rely on this information.

OKAY! So I got it working! The 8GB SD card didn't work so I used a 2GB one from my crackberry with an adapter!

After I did the master reset using the aforementioned technique it comes up and asks which file to restore from (from the SD card). You select it, it says something like "this may not work with this unit, blah blah blah blah" and you hit "yes" and VIOLA!

Thank you lxsys! I am adding to your rep! MAN! THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH!

DEWD! He provided the software and clear cut instructions in post 6 of this thread on how to recover the P2. I then provided additional info that it did NOT work with an 8GB one and that it worked GREAT with a 2GB one... I'm not trying to be mean but why would you need a recovery CD when you got this? Also, how would a recovery CD help if you don't have the USB sync cable for this phone?

My P2 arrived today, model no. CF-P2T1H027E.

It has Bluetooth, WiFi, I haven't found any GPS listed as yet so probably isn't installed. Just have to find my way around the P2 OS system now.

There could possibly be other software which isn't installed in the phone on the CD, as for the USB lead if a suitable connector is available making up a lead shouldn't be a problem.

If there's wifi, it will be under Wireless Power.
On mine, it doesn't show wifi under wireless power but suggests under network interfaces that there is a wifi card.
To check for WiFi cards, go into file explorer, Device, /Windows, search for PegasSTA.exe (the 29.0K one if you have two), and open it. If you haven't got a wifi module onboard, it will send out a warning and exit. If you do have the module, it will go to configuration.

So they say it has GPS, then they say this... I'm confuzzled. They made a mistake?
    ----

I think I gave the link to the pinouts, and a google product search I done when I was first researching the CF-P2 shows that modifyable cables should be easy to find. As for the CD, I believe it just contained the User manual and Microsoft ActiveSync, as the phones were all flashed with a made to order firmware upon leaving the factory. You won't be missing out on much if you've got a good firmware.

Ah yes, I get an error message upon trying to run it. I wonder where we can buy the Wireless module from?

Either way, this is a great phone. I have a separate query as i'm having some issues with my phone network, I can receive calls but cannot make any. Weird

I'm trying to locate a WiFi module too, but I need to find the part numbers... If anybody has the service manual for a WiFi model phone I wouldn't mind a copy. I'm also going in to pester the local panasonic shop, they don't actually stock the toughbook range but they'll happily enquire and order parts in on request if you speak really nicely to the manager.

If you can't make any calls, check that the SIM works in another handset, and if it does work in another handset but not work in the CF-P2, I would advise to do the .baf restore thing I described in post 6.

I have the manual for the P2-MK1. Uploaded it here for you
Visiting the Panasonic shop is certainly a good idea, if you find out any info please post back and let me know. I tried my SIM in a different phone and cannot make any calls, i'm guessing there is some kind of restriction on it or it is damaged. Weird!

(On another note) I'm curious on how to upgrade to a newer version of Windows Mobile on the CF-P2. Lxsys, you might know this one?

If possible, maybe a Linux distribution that is mobile in some way?

That's the User manual.. I have the service manual for the non-wifi P2 but I'm looking for a wifi CF-P2 service manual as it *should* contain the all important part number for the wifi module. I've sent an email to the shop, fingers crossed that they'll be able to track down the wifi module.

Windows mobile is built on Windows CE, and each image for a target device is highly customised for that specific device. I could try asking Panasonic for the project .bsp files, but I find it unlikely that they'll actually give them to me as they have put a lot of proprietary code into it. I have a Windows CE DVD and Visual Studio Pro kicking around under my bed somewhere.

It might also be possible to run Linux, uClinux or perhaps a custom built Android image, but it would take a lot of coding, and I'm not exactly the worlds best programmer.
Also, without the .bsp project files from Windows CE Image builder, it's nearly impossible without having to reverse-engineer the Windows Mobile firmware on the chips.

So they meant TomTom... I do hate it when people try to look smart, but fail epicly. I like their proof that it's a genuine copy too, it made me lol.
The TomTom versions are generally the crippled versions.
I'm sure there's a few of these floating around somewhere with internal GPS, by the look of all the "unused" com ports...

It's a funny 2.5mm socket... I've seen it before on a plantronics wired headset for an old samsung phone in a pound shop.. I think.
I've had no other luck identifying the connector yet, but as soon as I identify the funny socket and plug I'll let everybody know.
I do know that pan-toughbooks.com sells these headsets but I reckon you could probably take a cheapo headset and rewire a new plug on far cheaper once the plug part number and pinouts are available.

I'll have a look at putting together my own headset for this one!

Does O2 work with the CF-P2? I heard it doesn't, I've tried an O2 SIM and it cannot receive any incoming calls. I'm guessing the frequency is different or something. I was just interested in the Free Internet you get with O2 and then accessing it on my P2 for e-mail updates etc.

An O2 Sim should work fine in the CF-P2. If that O2 sim doesn't work in another GSM/2G phone then I'd assume the sim is faulty. I know O2 sims go dead if they havent been used in a while, otherwise I'd slip an O2 sim into my handset and test it.
It will NOT work with a * USIM*, as these are for 3G series handsets, of which the CF-P2 is not. It requires a SIM.
I would say who I'm on, but I don't want to advertise them as their support to me was [insert bad words here], especially in getting hold of APN settings for the CF-P2.

If you are looking for spare/new batteries for the CF-P2, I have found that the camera battery Fuji NP-120 (or equivalents) works well as a direct replacement. All you need to do is put a piece of card or thick tape on the battery to make it slightly thicker so that it presses the SIM card onto its contacts. Plenty available on Amazon or ebay.

Thanks for the info. Upon closer inspection of my screen, i've noticed whenever I open up a small window I see this small thin scanline across the screen. It's almost un-noticeble in certain angles. I'm guessing this is a problem with my screen or the onboard vga right?

Mine does that too, I would imagine it's just how the LCD and/or controller was designed.
I'm not sure if anybody else has a better explanation of the workings of a "grid" LCD, so here's my example in my poor ascii art:

    Code:
        1 2
     1 A B
     2 C D
Let's imagine that A, B, C and D are pixels on a greyscale LCD. Imagine you wanted pixel A active. You would apply voltage to row 1 and column 1. Unfortunately it would lead to pixels B and C being half-illuminated. LCD manufacturers have mostly overcome this by designing LCDs differently to my 4 pixel example, with clever resistors, diodes etc, but these extra lines can still happen. LCD controllers have also gotten smarter so they can compensate for LCDs that have these lines. The LCD guys are doing a good job in my opinion on big screens and other devices, for example I can put up a white screen on my new LCD monitor with a long black 1pixel line and remove 3 pixels in the centre and see no noticeable difference from the surrounding white.
If you like to study your LCD on the P2 as closely as I do, you may also be able to make out the refresh lines on the screen - this, and the lines, are absolutely nothing to worry about.

Here is WinFast GPS for CF-P2. Just extract it to your SD card and install the .cab file on your phone. You can use it to find your GPS device. :D

I think it's barely noticeble, I just have a good eye for detail usually with these sorts of things. I had a feeling it was normal as I have seen this before on other more primitive screens. Thanks for the heads up :)

If you spent all last night, i'm guessing you almost 100% came across this site GPRS Connectivity - Information and UK Settings. That is where I got my GPRS Settings *Working* on PAYG

    Orange GPRS settings (WAP):

    Homepage: http://orange.multimedia/
    Access Point (Contract): orangewap
    Access Point (PAYG): paygwap

    Gateway (IP) address : 192.168.071.35
    Username: Orange
    Password: Multimedia
    Session type: Continuous / permanent
    Authentication: Normal
    Port number: 9201 (or 8080)

    Orange GPRS settings (Email/Web):

    Homepage: http://orange.multimedia/
    Access Point: orangeinternet
    Access Point (Old PAYG): payginternet
    Username: user
    Password: pass
    Authentication: Normal

    Email SMTP server: smtp.orange.net
    Prim. DNS Server: 158.043.192.001
    Sec. DNS Server: 158.043.128.001

You might want to use the settings below only, that could work but then again it's contract so the settings are different. Just make sure you don't have any pending massive downloads for your inbox, it drained almost all of my credit when trying to download my 7GB Inbox on Gmail haha.

    AccessPoint: orangeinternet
