    Hi All,
Tried to search the forum but to no avail. As it is kind of urgent, pardon me if the post is inappropriately placed in any way.
I need help in replacing my HDD, I was thinking of changing my dieing 40GB to a larger capacity. Something that I need to know are:
    - is my HDD IDE or SATA?
    - is clipping pin 41 & 44 necessary for newer HDD to make it work for 3.3V?
    - for say 250GB, will the BIOS recognize it, or should I do any update first?
    thanks a million. :)

Can you get into device manager and find the model # of your 40gb hard drive,
Or look in computer , properties, hardware?

I can't go in and check the drive detail, in fact I can't even boot now :(
thanks for the link, I will check it.
I will also take out the HD later on, since it is now a goner...

When you remove it, check back and post the model #
Not much info available, I can't even tell you for sure if its 3.3v or 5.0v!

    Yes ide, But:
    I read where its 3.3v 2.5 hdd
Looks like you might have to mod the pins to use a standard drive!
There has been a few posts on the pin mod on the forum
    From a few months ago
But I was confused when I read them

If it was up to me I would sacrifice a old ide 2.5 drive to try to mod it
If the drive worked I would put in a low current draw drive

Or try the ebay link ( its a microdrive, and low current draw)

microdrive? isn't that a CF size about 1.8" or something?
I think the ebay seller just use that image not as actual item.
Anyway I will try use old IDE with/out snipping the pins, if either way works, I get a standard IDE HD as replacement. Otherwise I will have to get the ebay ones.
    Hope it work. Thanks!

Nice work Alex! I was sitting here wondering how I would ever find that thread.
GTO2, I have a 1.8" drive in my CF-07, I think they are mostly used in I-pod type devices. I did find some 20 & 30gb Hitachi ones when I was looking a while ago.

    @capt.dogfish
how did you make it work?
Sorry for being ignorant, I still don't understand the grasp of things..
are IDE 1.8" compatible with the 2.5" in general or there's some mods required?

    other note
    +---------------------------------------------------+-PCB-
    | B D . 2 4 o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o 42 44|
    | A C . 1 3 o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o 41 43|
    +---------------------------------------------------+

this should be it? All i need to get is a standard 2.5" IDE (assume to be 5V), do the mod and it will work too?

    GTO2,
The post you quoted is the last word on this. I haven't tried it, no need. Follow the instructions carefully. Read the whole thread! I just mentioned the 1.8" drive as I did have need for one in a CF-07 Toughbook and did some research.

I did say that I was confused a bit with the thread

Forum user name (ohlip) was successful I think

I am a bit confused with the drive on ebay
As I said ,confirm that it will work
I found that link before you had a model # for your hard drive

I would worry a bit on choosing a drive that may overpower the available current that your laptop has available.

I would like to know for sure what size/model number drive that has been used.

If it was my laptop I would put in my favourite ata 2.5 drive
    Samsung HM160HC
    It’s a 5400 160gb drive
Its quite a bit more capacity than your drive, but I have installed them in older toughbooks with windows xp with no issues

Once you mod it by cutting the pins , you are out about $70 if it won't work

yeah I got the same replacement HDD, Samsung HM160HC.
you got it worked without the mod?

I will try without the mod and since I would probably won't be needing old/original type of HDD and not to void the warranty, I may just modify the cable. If not wrong, pin 41 goes direct to first/last 3 stripes (all of which connected together).
Thinking of either cover or disconnect those lines carefully with pen knife or something.

I used the yellow transparent tape to carefully isolate these film pins. The tape went from top towards the pointy end and the bottom, to avoid it being peeled off when inserted. I also checked that on my CF-T2, pin 44 does not make any connection so instead of clipping it, I drill open the 44th slot on the adapter connector side.
This way I don't have to void my Samsung 3yrs warranty. :)
The BIOS has recognized the HDD now.

Thankyou so much for the pin 41 info and the help!
