    Hi all,

Im currently replacing a hard drive on a CF-Y5.
However, I forgot which way it was placed within the machine.
There is no indication on the cable itself which side is power etc...
Since I don't want to fry the drive I need to know which way it is connected from factory default...

Could anyone who has a CF-Y5 let me know, or tell me how it is connected if you know.

I have the service manual and spent a couple of hours on google search for it however, no luck... (so please don't refere to google :D )

    Thnx!

    Bas

I had the same problem on a 29 I had. I put in the HDD and it was backwards- but as a result it didn't fry it, it just didn't do anything.

I can't guarantee nothing will happen to your drive if you put it in backwards, but I'm pretty confident it should be alright. Does anyone else have anything to add?

Normally there is a pin block on the cable and a corresponding missing pin on the hard drive to ensure that it only goes in one way. Another way to tell is to make sure that the drive is square with the ribbon cable ie: if you have it wrong the cable will be offset from the drive and will not fit properly in the caddy. Another way to tell is pin one on the cable where the connector is soldered will have a square pad and pin one on the drive is closest to the jumpers so this can help to orient it properly.

There are 2 photos on page 78 of the Y5 service manuel that show the HDD. It installs with the PC board facing up in the HDD cavity on the bottom of the system - that is, PC board facing down when the laptop is right side up. I know that sounds confusing, but hope it helps.
