I heard I had a Mark 2 machine... CF-Y5LWFZZBM is the model number.

I am interested in upgrading the hard disk and memory. I'm not sure whats in here, regular ATA or SATA and if it has 2 micro dimm slots or just 1. Right now I got 1gb. MicroDimm 2gb is really expensive :(

    I love this thing tho!

    You can add
    1GB PC2-4200 microDIMM DDR2-533 MHz 172 pin
look under the notebook , the ram cover is there
    I think you have now one on-board 512 + one 512 removable
    The manual says 1.5gb max

    For hard drive I recommend
    Samsung HM160HC
    It’s a 5400 160gb ata drive

Just remember that the memory is microDIMM DDR2 172 pin
There is standard microDIMM DDR 172 pin around , but it will not work
    Sorry, no service manual

I have a CF-Y5 manual somewhere, but I think it's on my backup drive at home. Won't be back until 21 December if you don't mind waiting.

Hi, I have a question, can someone give me the hard drive model that's in the CF-Y5? Toughbook parts says it is part# NC3AYYY00006, and manufactured by Panasonic, but they don't make hd's do they? I think that's some sort of internal part number for the company, does anyone have the real model number of the hard drive? Also, can the stock 60gb hard drive be swapped for a higher capacity one or will there be some kind of size incompatibility?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

ps. I have a CF-Y5 service manual for anyone interested. Please pm me and I'll send it to you.

    elpidio,
Do a search, I think these are the infamous dual voltage hard drives. One of our resident geniuses came up with a hack which worked perfectly and let you get around the dual voltage requirement. Again, search on Google which will lead you back to the forum.

    elpidio,
Be calm. The fix is posted here somewhere. Google "notebook forum dual voltage hard drive" and see what you get.

I replaced the hard drive in my Y5 (1.83Ghz model) when I first got it. It was:
    - not a Panasonic branded drive
    - not a special dual volage drive
My Y5 had a bog-standard 2.5”/9.5mm PATA laptop drive, running at a pokey 4200rpm. I threw it out and put in a 160GB Samsung 5400rp. These days I think you get drives can them up to 250GB in PATA of that 9.5mm size.
The Y7 series moved to SATA drives, which means you can go up to 500GB at 5400 rpm or 320GB at 7200 rpm in those models.
So please, please, please. put that ”dual voltage HDD” thing to bed. It is way misleading. That is from way back in the Y2 times I think.

    - Unscrew the hatch underneath the laptop
    - Gently pull lose the HDD inside the casing
    - take casing off, but note which way it fits
    - gently remove HDD from extenable cable connect (you can break this so be careful)
    - swap new drive in
    - put the stuff back in in reverse order

    Its a pretty simple operation.

I highly recommend taking pictures as you dis-assemble the Y5. And from more than one angle. It takes a bit longer, but then you have a reference when you end up with an "extra" part or two. Good luck!
