I have a batch of external USB Iomega eGo encrypt plus hard disks. Our Toughbook users have std user level privilege and not local admin privilege.

The drives work in our std HP corp laptops but won't load properly on the Toughbooks. The Toughbook is a CF19. Anyone have hints on anything querky with USB comms ports on Toughbooks.

    Thanks

I use an Ironkey USB key (left over from previous employment) and the encryption chip in them makes them a bit power hungry - preferring powered USB ports. Some laptops provide limited power to their USB ports and substantially less juice if a number of USB items are plugged in at once (e.g. keyboard plus mouse plus external drive plus printer etc.).

I'm not sure about the Iomega but, since IK is the cadillac of these things, it is possible Iomega has similar sensitivities. To confirm, try taking a powered USB hub (the one with the "wall-wart") and plug it into your computer and then plug the Iomega into the hub. Some USB devices also don't like working through a hub - but at lease it should answer the question about whether its the USB power level giving you a problem.
