After a session including indicated updates, it says not to turn it off,, but after two hrs of that, and the on off switch not shutting it down. Seems all I can do is pull the battery...... would that screw up anything? thanks, newbie g rad

You have to keep the power-butten pushed for a while (5 seconds, I think) to force it to turn off. I'm not sure if this makes much of a difference compared to pulling the battery, though.

It will only power down by pushing the power switch if you have made it so in the power settings. If the button is still at the default setting, it will not turn it off. I think the default setting is sleep.
