A bump to 4gb total will help.

That would work but also try upgrading the hard drive to an SSD.

IMO no sense. You'll get 3.2GB vs 3GB (32-bit OS, 32-bit CPU). SSD and Win 10 (or Vista, of course) will make this laptop faster.

What programs are you tuning with? I ask as that is the main purpose I use my MK1 for too.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10!!!!! At least not without doing some serious digging, and realizing if you do you might put your tuning activities in jeopardy.

While it "might" help from a speed standpoint, it can screw you in other ways. I have three different programs that are supposed to work in Windows 10, and don't. The issue is com ports, especially RS232 and bluetooth serial coms. You can't get in to configure things.

As for memory, I have a 2gb chip here that will max you at the 3gb limit. I am not sure if you get any extra with 2x 2gb chips, if so it is minimal. It is yours for the cost of a PM with your address (as long as you are in the States lol).

I would lean towards using Vista, or Linux (depending on the software you are using, again toss that out there). I run mine on Windows 7, but it is not an easy install as no drivers were ever made to do so. You have to play the mix/match game and that isn't simple on a Toughbook. But it should be well documented in my thread on it (will post a link if you want).

Again, W10 will likely mess you up. If you are using any inexpensive Chinese dongles in your automotive adventures, most of them don't work well, if at all, under W10.

    Isn't it 3.2 GB vs 2.0GB?

He's on Win8 now, so do upgrade :)

    Oops. I understood 2-1GB as 2GB+1GB modules :)
In case of 1+1 there is sense to change 1 of the modules to 2GB one. 1GB+2GB=3GB. Ok :)

Unfortunately with what he is doing, there is a VERY VERY good chance he can't easily, or effectively use W10, if at all. This isn't all about the fastest and greatest OS, it is first off about a tool to do a specialized purpose.

If W10 would make my old MK1 faster, I would use it. I tried with a spare drive. Not a single piece of my software would work out of about a dozen programs. Sure if I spent an hour or so on each one, maybe I could have fixed one or two.

W10 is not user friendly to those needing to get in and modify com port settings. AFAIK, you can't do so at all. I mean why would they bother supporting such old outdated hardware anyways?

Problem is that on a lot of the tuning software out there you need to be able to get in and modify com port settings. And on a lot of the Chinese OEM fake dongles, they are not installer friendly and require some flexibility that W10 simply doesn't have. Why? Mostly because in the wrong hands that flexibility breaks stuff.

I agree comparing Win7 to Win10 re compatibility issues, but Win8 to Win10 - upgrade recommended.
What problems with COM port settings do you have?
    Win 10
