I did a few minimal searches but couldn't find anything so just created this file to help document information about the "original" fax modem installed in the CF28.

I have everything configured correctly for a fully functioning CF-28SRJGVDM and it's on COM3. (I have tested functionality, it's perfect)

I've looked around but can't find any newer driver than 5.0.0.2 which is what we all have it seems.

    Output from "Query Modem"

I will update this when I have more information.

Why bother you say? Well I have been in situations when I needed fax capability and about 3 months ago I also needed to use a modem (I do alot of internet security work and once in awhile...) also when the US turns into a third-world country... or you happen to be traveling in a third world country.

(using a unix command line at 30-56k baud sucks)

Seeing that back when dialup was popular, sites weren't overly filled with crap to bog them down. People optimised the internet, kept images to a minimum, etc, and at that point dialup was able to be usable (and even fast at the time).

Unfortunately for dialup, the internet grew into a monster. Myspace even chokes my cable because retards have a million videos and pictures to load when you open their profile. Other sites are still bandwidth hogs as well.

This means if I have to wait for dialup, I'd rather just wait until I have a good high speed connection. If information is needed and I'm away from a high speed hookup, I'll call somebody to get that information.

With that said, I've got a stack of modems sitting on my parts pile that will never get used. I hope you can figure out the fax issue.

(I just threw away my 9600 baud modem a few months ago... that thing had been collecting some massive dust in a box for several years. I got rid of the 2400 baud some time ago though!)

2400 baud modem you say! I will take all you have....
Our energy management system at the public school where I work, still uses them and we need backups.
Also need 386 and 486 DOS machines.
    On topic....
I just loaded the drivers for the internal modem in my 28 but have not tested them yet.
Not sure why I loaded them, guess cause its there, well for another day or too anyway.

Don't the 56k modems take the same AT commands as the old 2400s did? if you're serious about needing old modems and x86 boxes, i'll keep an eye out for you. i don't thnk i have any on hand right now, just a few mobo's. but i guess my same question applies.. what can you do on an x86 that can't be done on a socket 7?

i've got a big stash of old HDs and floppy drives as wll, if you need them.

You know, most of the more popular sites have a WAP profile built into them... as these are optimised to CDPD data rates and tiny telephone screens, they do tend to load much quicker, even on dialup.

I may be an old relic but I miss the days when web sites had mostly text on them. You didn't have to keep clicking and wait clicking and wait as much even at slower speeds. Someday someone will write a song saying Netscape (Mosaic) killed the Gopher ;) Don't mistake me, I would not trade what we have today in terms of technology and access, but I don't need 300k of graphics (all the menus, border/corner images, complicated tables fitting multiple pieces of a graphical border together) when all I wanted was two text sentences in the middle of all that rot.

    Amen, brutha.

Of course without it we couldn't have the 6$ worth of ads that paid for a $4 webhit so you could sent $0.10 worth of text to your neighbor...

The system is proprietary Trane, 2400 is the only thing it will take, even a 9600 running at 2400 gives it fits.
We could even use 5 1/4" floppy drives. Seen any of those lately! In the buildings we have DOS machines as dumb terminals.
We are a tax exempt public school so we can provide a letter of donation for tax purposes.
The Trane technology is from the late 1980's area. We do have one building that we updated during a remodel but that was 7 years ago and guess what, they hardly support it anymore, so now another upgrade is on the table. Man that stuff is expensive.
Anyway, thanks for thinking of use if stumble across anything.

    Heh...

I'm wondering if they could put my conversation piece Zenith Z-120 (with WORKING 5MB full-height Winchester HD) back to work... a little CP/M refresher? Some FORTRAN/COBOL/PASCAL anyone? Maybe we could update the network with a Forth-Multix patch...

    mnem
Well, would you look at that - binary moths...

i've got 5 or 6 K10s in my basement, waiting for me to revive them :) They've been waiting.. ohh.. about 10 years now I'm on a repairing streak right now, so I might start digging them out and seeing what they need.

The guy I got them from said they were for the maintenance department of the local bus line. I wonder if any of them still have the software on the HD? That could get interesting!

    Heh -

I wonder if they were actually used for diag, or just accounting/payroll. Those old ST212 hard drives are prolly worth a bit for collector value by now. You could upgrade them to a whole 40 or 65 MB. I wonder if the K10s could accept an RLL controller... then you could get up into what? 120 MB? Of course, there's no telling if the OS could manage that much storage without a kernel rebuild. I remember reading in the Computer Shopper (Back when it was 2 feet tall & 2" thick) about some guys reworking the timing circuit on these to push them up to 10 & 12 mhz... WOW!!!

I believe you can set IE to show only text and avoid pictures and pop-ups for sure. I think it has a text only feature for slower connections...

I just got good news... FIOS is being installed in my neighborhood... They are digging all over the place!
