My CF28 is in need of another MB and I'm not having any luck finding one with the same model# as mine. (DL3UP1151 EXB) I can find "BAB" and some others, but not the "EXB". Not sure of the significance of these last 3 characters in the model designation. May not be an issue - I'm not sure. Any advice on which one and possibly where would be the best place to get a decent MB would be much appreciated.

    Larry-

    Welcome to the forum!

First, we'll need the full model # from the bottom of the laptop or within the BIOS; it's the number that starts in CF28.

From there we can help you find out which generation 28 you have (Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3) and then maybe the right MB.

You are looking for the wrong part number. What you need to look for is a MK3 or 1GHz CF-28 mobo...

    Per configurator,

Pentium III 1GHz, 12.1" Transflective touch screen, 30GB, 256 MB RAM, 56K/LAN, FDD, WIN XP

    Thanks ToughBook
I guess I'm confused now. When I search for CF-28 MBs that DL3UPXXXXX number is all that I'm finding.
I did find this just now. Is it what I'm looking for?
    Rare Panasonic CF-28 P3 1GHz 512mb onboard motherboard - eBay (item 380251587031 end time Aug-15-10 12:14:49 PDT)
I'm sorry I'm such a newbie, but I really have no experience with the ToughBooks. I ended up with this one about 6 months ago and have been using on my vehicle computer (OBD II) analyzer and fell in love with it. About a month ago it started acting up getting very sluggish and slow. The SYSTEM process was running the CPU at %100. (Not SYSTEM IDLE. I do know the difference) After much troubleshooting which included -
    MemTest 86 - Passed
Virus scans, Malware and spybot chasers - all passed
Shutdown all system processes possible via msconfig - problem persisted
    CPU Temp = ~65C
Removed the HD and USB it to another machine and ran the SeaTools suite on it - all passed.
At this point I purchased a CD drive for it from Bob Johnson's Computers and FDISKed, formatted and reloaded XP - Problem is still there. Even with a fresh install CPU usage by SYSTEM is %100 and it isn't usable. So now I'm looking for a MoBo. Unless there is something that I'm overlooking and someone would be very gracious and share with me.

Unless you want to swap mother boards as a learning exercise, I suspect you can probably find a whole computer stripped down for less than that mobo. Since you have all the parts, any decent stripper would do. Actually, I've got a MK2 bare bones for $40 + shipping or a MK3 for $55 + shipping.

Oh, yeeeowch. That MB is priced very high.

Do yourself a favor, take Cap'n up on his offer. You won't regret it.

It IS high proced but it is the rarer type with 512MB on board RAM instead of the usual 256MB... With that said... I'd take Capt up on his offer.

Thanks guys. OK - please bare with me - what's the difference between the MK2 and MK3?
Capt - I'm thinking I might take the MK3. Could you e-mail me some details about the machine and payment / shipping details ?

    Mk2 and Mk3 are same chassis/MB... Mk2 is 800Mhz & Mk3 is 1000Mhz.

Mk1 (600Mhz) is a completely different animal; MB, lower chassis, HDD caddy are all different from Mk2 & Mk3.

    Mk-ed.

To relay the advise mnem gave in another post. Did you remove the ram module, pcmcia cards, usb devices, cd drive, maybe even the wifi card, and boot it with nothing connected?
Do you have a bootable cd version of xp? Boot with no hard drive if you do.

Deere245 - I've tried everything there except booting with no hd. Will try that this afternoon.
:D Capt - I guess it would be easier for you to email that info to me if you had my email address. I just realized that it wasn't showing in my profile. It is [email protected]

Just to bring everybody up to date - Got the stripper from the Cap'n - added what was needed from mine and wah-lah - it's alive and well. Still would like to get the built in internal wifi going. Any suggestions on cards ?

Thank you guys for all your help. Your advice was right on target and you saved me time and money - many thanks. :)
