    Hi
new to toughbooks and new to this forum and have read most of the cf-28 gps thread but am wondering if anyone has used the internals from one of these to install an internal gps?

I believe that others have incorporated USB GS units into their Toughbooks... But you would need to use internal USB pinouts and then worry about the antenna and how you would handle that. I doubt there will be an antenna connection on the one you describe.

Why not just buy a EM408 from the same company and install it? Same GPS just a lot more convenient to hack into a computer, and there are full instructions right here with antenna options and all.

The CF-28 installs just like the CF-29?

No, the CF-28 hack generally involves the use of the RIM modem daughter board. The principle is the same. The absolute apex of this forum was the "mini manhattan project" when Rick and Modly and others were trying to get after market GPS to work in the CF-28 and the posts were flying fast and furious well into the wee hours. The thread is a good read. The point is, why chop up a USB GPS when you can get the same engine as a stand alone with proper connectors.

Another posibility is a PCMCIA-based solution as there are a few (not many) SIRF-3 based GPS cards with compact-flash interfaces (that can go into a PCMCIA socket using a CF to PCMCIA adaptor). Something like this for example.

I think the problem would be, like with trying to get 3G wireless cards for PCMCIA, that the 'bulge' for the antenna means that the PCMCIA slot cover can't be closed with the card is plugged in.

The beauty of the EM-408 solution is that it's all internal and utilises the same RIM card (on the CF-28 at least) that the factory GPS module gets fitted to.

    Craig.

I have to agree. Rick and others have never steered me wrong. Other than a comm port issues that had me pulling my hair out and bugging the bejeasus out of Rick and Keven. The gps mod was pretty straight forward with Rick and others guiding me along the way. You cant go wrong with the EM408 see attached picture
