Good evening group. Complete Ludite Fred here. I have decided that I need a new ( to me ) laptop that I can carry on my motorcycle. I have been following a Canadian seller on eBay and I am completely confused. He seems to have a gazillon of them. I need/want GPS, 250 gb hard drive , sort of water proof, DVD drive and whatever else that I might need. I bid on one that I thought would fit the bill but missed it by $5. What should I have to pay for a good serviceable unit with a couple hrs battery life. I would use it in my van for GPS. The screen on my Garmin is too small for these old eyes. I have Streets and Trips 2013 and like to make a map and save it to use later. I drive back roads that are a big nothing on my Garmin. I am on a budget so new is out. I would need to receive email and social media , but no games or movies. Anyone got some helpful advice?

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum
Well if you are looking for a CF-30 look for a MK2 or MK3 which is a COR 2 DUO. Remember you get what you pay for. Priced anywhere from $50.00 to $1000.00 . If you only pay a few hundred dollars you will not get much. -
My budget is $450-$500 USD. I am in Canada , that's why I was watching the guy from Ontario. My problem is that I don't know what to look for. My thought is that if it doesn't say that it has X then it doesn't.

Keep in mind that some of the stuff you want can be added later. DVD drive, backlight keyboard, larger hard drive, memory, etc. If you buy an aftermarket gps module you'll get a newer, more sensitive and accurate gps and they're only about $100 from custom-toughbooks.com.

Before you go bid on one you should know the full model number. This will give you a idea what's inside like....
CF-30C is a MK1 Cor Duo (2400)
CF-30F is a MK2 COR 2 Duo (7500)
CF-30K is a MK3 COR 2 Duo (9300) -
Thanks guys. I will go on the hunt tomorrow. I am not in a rush.

If you want to use it for GPS in your van you might wan to look at a CF-18/19. Considerably smaller than CF-30 but big enough for GPS.

i own a '30 that i decked out (well no finger print reader) ...
i took it along on a flight yesterday ... it is a little behind on the display at 180 knots ...
(on the road , it will even show which side of the road i am driving on ... or which lane i am in)
the '30 may be a bit big for motorcycle use ... it sure took up a lot of room in that cessna 310b .
the '18 or '19 will fill the bill better (i believe) .
you can find these on sneezebay or perhaps one of the members here has one to sell .
if you go the ebay route , post some links and we can help you out .
there is another by/sell section elsewhere ... perhaps one of the members can send you a link .
ps ... what kind of bike do you own ? -

I like the CF-19 the most. The 19 is what I use in my truck when traveling. It's not to big or to small. Battery life is great at between 3 to 5 hours. There is no cd/dvd in the 19 but all you need is a external one if you need to load anything on it and It's easy to carry.

CWB32... I just gave away an 83 Silverwing Interstate in good working order, sold my '63 Velocette Thruxton that I bought in '68, have a deposit on my '49 Vincent Rapide bought in '70, building a cafe racer from a '92 Sportster flat tracker, and riding a 2000 Buell S3T.
To the group... Bought a CF30 Mk3 with most of the whistles and bells. Has GPS but no software. Says I can use my Streets 2013. About $500. Should have it in a week. Have I made a misteak? Time will tell. Wasn't rode hard and put away wet... he says.
By looking at the bottoms of your replies, you guys collect notebooks like I collect motorcycles .. Oh look, there's one I don't have. A friend once told me he collected Browning Hi Powers by serial number. -
I had an FEG High-power clone, brand new. Wish I could have afforded the Browning, but it was a perfect fit for me. Easy to handle and it just felt right...sigh.....
-
They don't bring much up here. Want one with a Lend Lease decal still on it? Had a SAFN in '06.
I know I know, off topic . -

The FN49...traded a long barrel AKM clone for a nice 8mm Mauser model, more then likely Egyptian. Nice shooter, also had a FAL.

1. Can you get into the BIOS ?
2. How many hours is on it? (1st BIOS screen)
3. Is it a touchscreen ? (Not all 30's are) -
Now I have Toughbooks.
-
Tough as.. Has touch screen. Upgraded to 500 gb hard drive. You can see it on Ebay. 400507228712. $ 346 USD plus $ 30 drive upgrade .Have a squint. Lets call it a vertical learning curve.
49 FN...Sold my sniper 25 years ago. Here in Canada we were ahead of the game then. Bought a TRW M14 as new for $500. same time. El preemo. -
Looks like a good deal on the CF-30 .My favorite was my Springfield Armory M1A. outstanding reliability and accuracy.

about that '30 you linked to ...
it looks like that may have a "stock" gps module .
there is a great after market unit for about 80 bucks ... you'll be throwing rocks at the stock one .

a little inside work is needed but it is pretty straight forward stuff .
elsewise , the machine looks good .
heh ... an upgrade to a SSD for that price would have been sweet .
you'll want/need one of those 12VDC/120VAC power supplies/chargers .
i believe that safn1949 might have one kicking around .
a "regular" 12vdc to 19.xx vdc adapter will kill the comp in short order . -

If you set the Sportster up like the KRTTs Harley built for Cal Rayburn and Dick Mann to use at Daytona bike week 1970 you will have plenty of room for a CF-19 on the triple tree.
I'm not a fan of Harley's for carrying Toughbooks but that is one of the prettiest scooters I've ever seen. Little short on brakes for street work though.
