Hi all, tonight I've fitted a new WD 320gig Black Scorpion hdd into a new hdd caddy, I've been trying for 3 hours now to load winxp........

The BIOS lists the 320gig hdd... :)

I have the sata driver on a floppy (downloaded tonight)

WinXp starts the install, I press F6, winxp loads some more and asks for the sata driver, I push in the the floppy disc and press enter (theres 4 drivers in the download I tried all 4), Xp loads some more then informs me that it can't find a hdd........AAAARRRRRR

The only thing I can find is in the BIOS under:

    Security

    Computrace Sub Menu

    Sub Menu: Protected

    Comptrace Bios Module: Disable

Would these settings stop winxp from installing the sata driver.......

A very confused and up tight...zzr1200......

    Any pointers/ideas. please

You shouldn't need to press F6... F8 eventually, yes perhaps if you are loading without the Recovery Disks... IIRC.... F6 loads RAID drivers.... not SATA drivers...

See FAQ-0696: In the case of clean installation of Windows XP For CF-30C/D(mk1):
    ...
    [Installation of Windows XP](English)
    1. Set the floppy disk drive and insert the floppy disk made in the [Making of Driver Floppy Disk] to it.
The floppy disk will be used for the installation‚ so please do NOT remove it.
    * Please connect USB FDD with the USB port at the right of the CF-30.
    2. Insert the installation CD of Windows XP and boot up the computer.
    * Unless it is CD-ROM of the Windows XP SP2 application being completed‚ the blue back occurs at
    last stage of boot.
    3. When the following "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI and RAID driver…" message is
displayed in the lower part of the screen‚ press "F6" key.
(The message will have been displayed only while the "F6" key is effective.)

Hi All, thanks for the replies definitely more awake this evening, the install continues, I had downloaded the correct driver pack (F6flpy32.exe file) and copied to a floppy

Last night after pressing F6, I could get to section 4 of the Toughbook clean install instructions, then when 'Windows Setup (section 5) appears it shows 4 drivers in the window (there are more hidden but required scrolling to show, which I didn't realise at the time, hence my statement of "only 4 drivers all of which I've tried".

    Anyway back to tonight:

Floppy in A:\ usb lead plugged into correct usb port (same one as last night), WinXP disc in CD/Rom in MP, start computer, winxp starts to load, press F6, winxp continues to loads to (section 4), press 'S' as stated, section 5 appears. T/B's clean install instructions use "Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller(M , on my CF30's screen I have a box with 4 drivers listed which are the ones I tried last night. I didn't see the others listed which require scrolling the driver list.

Now theres a BIG BUT, the "Intel(R)82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller" isn't listed at all.

I do have the following drivers listed:

    Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH8R/DH/DO SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH8H-E/M SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH9R/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller

    Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID Controller

    Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA RAID Controller

    Intel(R) ICH7MDH SATA Raid Controller

    Intel(R) ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO SATA RAID Controller

    Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller

But no Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller which I need to progress to install WinXP.......AAARRRRRRRR

Can anybody tell me which driver to use, please,,,,,,,,, pretty please?????????

    ZZR.......:confused2: :confused2: :confused2:

I have never had to choose a controller for the hard drive in ANY installation that I have done EXCEPT when I installed a RAID array. You should NOT need to plug in anything into your USB unless you are booting from a USB DVD Rom.

So... What I would do.... Press F2 at start-up... That puts you into the BIOS... Arrow over to the EXIT tab and then arrow down to "LOAD DEFAULT VALUES".... F10 - save - exit.... Press F2 at boot again.... Make your DVD the first bootable device. save - exit.... Make sure that your XP disk is loaded in the DVD drive... And reboot.

LET IT LOAD! When it comes up PRESS F6 TO LOAD DRIVERS.... IGNORE THIS! LET IT LOAD. It will keep going and start loading XP. There WILL come a time where you will need to "agree" to MS' agreement and you WILL need to push F8.... It will offer you formatting options and then partitioning options. But other than that I think you are getting stuck in a spot you don't even need to be in.

Make sure that you have your COA ready from the bottom label of your Toughbook (Hopefully you do not have a Vista COA) so that you can enter that when called upon to do so.

Or you can get a Recovery Disk.... I also have an MK1 CF-30 so I have an extra. PM me if you are interested... I'm getting ready to leave on vacation so it may be next week before I can get back to you.

Hi Toughbook, I have never had to install a driver for a hdd either while installing an OS, but Panasonic's clean install instructions state that you do have to use the F6 key and select a driver/controller.

I'm going to leave it for tonight and have another go tomorrow evening, I don't have a Panasonic Re-Install Disc, I'd be interested in one even if its only a back up copy..... ;) I'II pm you my address just let me know how much the postage is (pay via PayPal?).

    COA on the bottom....

I still have the original 80 gig hdd which I'm keeping as a back up for the time being.

    Hope you enjoy your vacation.

If you don't need a clean install, why not clone your old drive to the new drive?

Cloning maybe the last answer but I'd prefer a clean install.

I use this laptop for work, having to delete, download new/updated wiring diagrams and software programs for machines. The laptop is getting slow and there are serveral control files/drivers and machine programing utilities with various versions, that need to be available if required. I have about 35 gig of operators/parts/service manuals in PDF files, plus other wiring diagrams and spec sheets.

Plus it will force me to go through some of the files and sort them out...

The laptop needs a good spring clean and service, the touchpad has a 1/2 inch dia hole worn in it so theres a dead spot in the middle, the touch screen anti-scratch sheet needs replacing, the 80 gig hdd is filling up.

I have the parts for the above and I am waiting for an emissive keyboard to arrive.. :)..

I'II take some photos and do a write up if the mods want.....just let me know if your interested.

If your hard drive in the CF-30CTQ is in SATA AHCI mode, you will need the driver off the Panasonic web site, and press F6 during WinXP installation initial stages to install the driver in order for WinXP to see the hard drive.

To the guys that apparently don't press F6 - are your hard drives in SATA compatible mode? This would mean that you wouldn't need the driver...

Your recovery disk left this morning! ;) Save on the premature gray hair.... Or loss thereof..... Just hang a week or 10 days and it will be there....

EDIT - FYI... I bought the WD Scorpio Blue 320GB SATA HD for mine... I have loaded XP and W7 on this drive and others..... I never pushed F6!

As I said... The only time I have EVER pushed the F6 key was when I was setting up a RAID array on a few of my personal desktops.... Never on a laptop.... I just let it whiz by.

Perhaps you have a Vista BIOS revision and you are trying to load XP?

Can you post what BIOS you have installed?

Limited access for me for the next few days as I am on vacation...

Hi TB, I've been Gray for years, the ex-wife saw to that at the divorce...

    Info from the Bios:

    Model CF-30CTQAZBM

    Ser No 7EKSA36515

    Bios V1.00L16

I haven't even given the bios version any consideration, I know XP and Vista bios's are different for the MK1's, I've never updated it or re-loaded the OS until now, it's just always worked.

If rumours are correct and Panasonic Toughbook Tech stick their heads around the door sometimes, perhaps someone could possibly "Phone a friend" and invite them around for afternoon tea with a very long chat.

Because I'm stumped on this one!!!!

The only thing I'm not sure about is what "Comptrace" in the bios can inhibit, could it stop the install process if its in "Protection" setting, should it be disabled???

Its a good job I fix mewp's for a living the hammer will be in use a lot today......... .........off to work now, w'airs me ammmer.

Computrace won't affect the hard drive - it's a computer tracking service/software for theft recovery.

Toughbook - I'm still intrigued. Are your units in SATA compatible mode? It should say in the BIOS and will show under Device Manager whether you're in SATA AHCI or Compatible mode.
