I am thinking of sticking an SSD drive in the CF30 and wonder if there are any downsides to using the Caddy that has the heater in it?

I am fairly sure that the SSD will not nead the heater but can it be a problem to have it in place?
I would certainly prefer to not have the battery drain of the heater and if it can be removed I would do that.

    Anyone know for sure?

I would attach it. It doesn't eat the battery very much and even though it's okay to have a cold SSD I think it still would wear it out pre-maturely so I would recommend just hooking it up

    Thanks for the reply.
What do you think the possibility is of getting a 2nd drive to work in the MP bay?

Any ideas where I might get a carrier that would interface in there?

And last,if I did could it be the boot drive?

    Thanks
    Ed

I believe if you look for DVD to Hard Drive on Google.... You will find it. I thought I had the link in my favorites... But I cannot find it now...

I have a 2nd drive that I can put in the media bay, It works but on the CF-28 it almost doubles the boot time.

The HDD heater is temperature controlled; the intent is to warm the bearings in the hard drive because the lubricant in said bearings thickens with the cold. Once the hard drive is warmed up to a minimal operating temp, the heater shuts off and the HDD spins up.

Unless you're planning to use the laptop in subfreezing weather after leaving it turned off and exposed to the cold for hours so it gets down to ambient temperature the heater will never come on. Even then it only operates for a minute or two, drawing no more current than the laptop does while running; so in effect, whenever it operates the only thing you lose is a few minutes of operating time until it boots up.

Most people, even when they use their laptop out in the cold, will do so straight from a warm environment like their house or car, in which case you really have nothing to worry about as the operation of the laptop will keep its hard drive warm enough.
