My CF50 is making HD noises and I want to change it before it gives up completely. Any suggestions on what drive to get? Also do I just clone the old drive to a portable drive and then copy it back to the new one? Any info would be appreciated.

Get a new Samsung HM160HC, on Fleabay for about $55-$65. Yes you can simply clone the old drive, or make an image and burn it to the new one. I use "HD Clone"
Miray Software - HDClone - Hard disk copy, hard disk backup, hard disk rescue!

Fantastic! I found one at Amazon for $54 shipped. I am not to familiar with cloning, do you use the free HD Clone ? Are there detailed instructions somewhere? Thanks for all your help.

Actually I paid for the upgraded version of HD Clone and use it a lot to make images of each kind of Toughbook after it's loaded and working. But the free version should do fine for you. The user interface is easy. If you have an external USB drive caddy, you don't need to make an image just boot from the HD Clone disk and copy the CF-50 hard drive directly to external USB new drive.

Drive showed up today, no Samsung in stock Amazon substituted a WD Scorpio. Cloning went flawlessly, now how the heck do you get at the old hard drive. It is encased in an aluminum coffin, do you pry it off? I'm afraid I'll break it.

    Last question, I promise

Mate, did you just say break in reference to a toughbook? HERETIC!

I dont have that particular model, but trust me, unless you go at it with a hammer, it wont break. Use a sensible amount of force and you'll be fine. Check for small screws on the sides though , my cf-25 had thoselittle buggers you dont see until its too late.

cf 50 has 2 small clips on each side of caddy. Stick a straightened paper clip in each one to hold it and separate the caddy.
