other than using mil connectors and conforming to mil standards it is not that special. That company slightly modifies all kinds technology and repacakegs it for mil consumption at an outragious mark up. the sell fujinon gyro stabilized binoculars for 3 times what they cost from fujinon, but they do add a mil grade cable to them and put them in a housing that is "maybe" as good as the fujinon. I have seen these in person, they are rather cheesy. If there wern't toughbooks then they would be very cool. I'm usually much more into the hard to find boutique tpe products but the toghbook though a mass maket product is truly the pinacle of practical, usable long lasting rugged laptops. Just my .02 worth.

I emailed the guy and told him who I was and what I did.... Then I admired his laptop. (I also warned him to cover up his COA!) I told him that I couldn't afford THAT laptop.... He chuckled and asked me to make an offer. I think I'll stick with my Toughbook. It's already big enough for me. That one is just a little too big! It would be like carrying the "Nuclear Football" around with you.

lol I think the one I posted is the King of Rugged laptops. Though I will Say TOUGHBOOK laptop are the MOST TESTED TRIED AND TRUE. While I like the one posted, I WOULD stick with Toughbook because of Parts and reputation. Who knows how well the other stands up or what BUGS or defects may exist that Panasonic worked out on their Toughbook series over YEARS of testing.

After all it mentioned in the listing designed in 2006 thats a newcomer compared to the Toughbooks.

Still... for everything you get... Not a bad price. Maybe he would take an offer of $650? 850Mhz & GPS? Not a bad price...

I still like the original one too.

A pawn shop sold one similar to that (same brand slower processer) for 700 dollars a few months back. I almost bid on that one, but the idea of getting parts scared me off.

I think it looks kinda cool, but the novelty will wear off very quickly. If I was running out of room to stash my cash, I MIGHT pick one up, but even so, at $6k, I really don't think its worth it. For something so damn expensive, I'd expect it to be A LOT more hard core than the current TB series. Only surviving a 3 foot drop? Thats not really anything impressive at all. There's a video of a CF-30 being run over by a truck while powered on, now THAT's impressive! The case handle looks like a cheap afterthought rather than fully integrated like the TBs. I know fully riggidized laptops are supposed to be thick and heavy, but there is a point where its TOO thick and heavy.

The fact that it can house 2 batteries is impressive, but only up to 8 hrs? I can go 6 to 7 hrs and mine only has one. Also, the design leaves a lot to be desired as well, but thats just personal opinion. Even though the TBs are a mass market product, I must say, it is one of the most attractive full ruggdized laptops out there with both form AND function.

I'm not knocking this, as I'm sure there are people who will prefer this over the current TBs.

I think what I found interesting is the Mil spec ratings it has a EMI etc one. Which would indicate more than not that it IS EMP proof. But then again the toughbook may be also. On the hours that may be for 1 battery we dont know for sure but most military crap uses juice like no tomorrow. lol

The only GRIP I HAVE ON TOUGHBOOKS is the color I think they should come in black the Silver is just not a great Idea for military applications, I KNOW its better for heat, but still no matter how they coat it, it still reflects and give the position away. Not that this effects us, but since the military buys it you think they would do the GETAC method and go black and DROP the silver already.

I kind of doubt that a sniper would be hiding in the bushes all camo'ed including his rifle, but using a laptop at the same time. The good thing about the silver part is that its non reflective the way chrome or brushed aluminum is. You never know, for those recon missions, they might paint the laptop to whatever suit the mission like they do to their weapons. But you're right, for the rest of us, its a non issue.
