I have a Panasonic CF-VDD721 combo-DVD unit. I guess its left over from my CF-71/72 or so.
I want to swap one of my CF-29s CD-rom drives with this one. I am not handy with soldering things.
Does anybody know, if this combo-DVD can be swapped , and will work in my CF-29 ?
Otherwise i can save my time, and leave it alone....

I never took the drive apart when I had my 72's but I don't think you have to solder anything. Should be pretty much plug and play. Panasonic cd/dvd drives are set to master unlike most of the drives you come across. The only time you have a problem is when the Drive is a non-master drive then you need to solder between two terminals on the CF-29 optical drive caddy. (You can also solder two connectors together inside the drive (not the caddy) to accomplish this.

CF-27, CF-28, CF-29 CD to DVD Swap Tutorial-Lots of Pictures! - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion
One good resource page is gone. I will have to see if I have it saved in my personal archives, but google "internet wayback machine" and then look up http://www.sparesweb.com/hdd/instal...ace connector for laptop and slimeline cd.htm then go back and look at the archived pages to see it. Several shots of it saved.
Edit: Go back to the web archive to the first of 2007 and you can save that page and it's pictures are there. -
Yes! go ahead, they are both master in setting. No need for soldering just swap the bare drive to each other and your good to go.
ohlip
