I received some restore discs from Tomcat today. Then I headed to Staples to get an external DVD-ROM. I came home and hooked it up and when I booted the computer up the drive spun around for a minute and then the computer screen read:

    CD-ROM not ready aborting installation.

The following file is missing or corrupted: COMMAND.COM

I made sure that the CD-ROM drive was at the top of the list. In fact I made sure that the hard drive was at the bottom of the list. I tried both USB ports. I even booted the computer up and the CD-ROM installs just fine there.

Is there something wrong with the CD?

Is there something I can do to make it install?

    Thanks,

    Chad

you may need to get a usb sony drx-820u dvd/cd rewriteable drive. Had the same problem with a new dvd/cd drive and this was the only thing that would take the restore disc. It takes a bit of time for the cd to load so don't rush it. can either use a panasonic external dvd/cd drive unit that most likely would work but cost a bit more or get one of these reasonable off fleabay..... hope this helps...........Driller

Thanks for that. I found one cheap on Amazon and it's only a state away so hopefully it'll get here soon.

    I have had good luck with the Samsung Model SE-S084. I have used it on CF-18 Mk5, CF-29 Mk4 & 5, CF-19 Mk2, CF-30 Mk2 and CF-T5 Mk3.

I also have one of those on order from Amazon for my Mac Mini. Between the two hopefully one will work for me.

Even some panasonic usb drives won't work
I have in my collection (4) usb drives (2 are panasonic)and I have ran into situations where 3 will not load , and the 4th one a cheap generic worked

That was an issue mostly on my cf-19

OK testing on my cf-18 mk-2
I just used the erase function

    Panasonic KXL-CB30A works
Genaric using a panasonic blu-ray reader works
    Panasonic CF-VDRRT3 works
Using the usb port on the side next to the power input

Note that neither Panasonic worked when restoring my cf-19 for some reason

You should get the "this machine does not support error then"

I had to mod the first disk in my cf-18 mk-2 set to work

Anyways it's easy to check if the usb cd rom will work
Any windows O/S disk will probably show the same error that the restore disks are showing

Evening guys. I was just curious about something. Since certain driveless Toughbook models like CF-18`s support USB booting, wouldn`t it make better sense to create a USB flash/thumb drive restore/install out of your restore discs ( via desktop with DVD drive and some boot creation programs ) and load it up on CF-18`s? And not have to worry about USB CD-rom drive compatibility? A spare 2GB flash should more than suffice, I`d think.

Or is this simply not possible with restore CD`s at the moment?

    Just wondering, is all.

The other day I had to use IMG Burn to create an Iso from the disc that would not work...and then burn that image to a disc and Voila! Other times the installation will fail part of the way through and if I use the option to partition the drive it will work...Or maybe it was just the new curse words I came up with had some kind of magical power...

Does this happen when you insert another dish like going from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. If so give the cd time to spinup....10-15 seconds, I had this problem with the install failing because I was in to much of a rush.

I received my Samsung DVD ROM today. It was on back order for about a month and the day after I ordered the Sony it was shipped. I guess that's how things work. :(

Anyway, I plugged it in to the computer and put in the restore disk and it gave me some sort of error that disc L wasn't being read. I was getting frustrated but then I took out the disk, booted up the computer and let the drivers get installed for the CD drive and put the disc back in and rebooted the computer.

This time it seems to be working. I might be getting ahead of myself but I'm on the second disc and I'm getting hopeful. :)

If this works, I want to thank everyone for their help and Tomcat for the discs.

    Chad

What happens when you boot to the restore disk it scrolls through the driver install process
While this is happening ,it's common to see errors reported (I have seen those errors too),this takes around 15 seconds
But when this is finished you are left with an option to erase or restore your hard drive , or if you are using the wrong restore disks you will see "this machine does not support" message
That is where you want to end up and if you never get to this point your usb drive is non-compatable

It sounds like the second usb drive works, if you are on disk 2
