i just got a cf 29 and it was working great then it just shut off on my all I did was plug a mouse into it. I traded for the comp off of craigslist and I saw it boot up and windows worked not real sure of the condition of the battery but the guy that I got it from had a aftermarket ad adapter, it has 20 volts coming out of it, I don't know how long he has been using it like that. Does anyone think that it just burned up on me on the inside? I can't get it to do anything no flickering of any of the status lights by wiggling the jack or cord nothing. I opened up the bottom and don't smell anything burnt. I traded for it so I'm not out cash but gas and time spent driving to get it, I have another cf29 that don't power up either.

It is a CF -29e4KGZKM, I kind of figured I would need the right adapter but don't know if I want to spend that much on this thing and it not work, I think I can get a closer ac adapter that will work

For starters STOP using the 20v power supply. Your CF-29 requires 15.5-16 volts and the 20v unit may have already burned something up. You don't need an OEM adapter but search this forum for acceptable alternatives which do NOT include the $6.95 Chinese junk that's all over ebay.

Remember, the IBM, and the Sony for that matter, come in both 16v and 20v versions. You have to be careful.

my first guess would be that an internal fuse let go ... hopefully that is .
if you did not notice an *odd* aroma (smells like magic smoke) emanating from the unit , chances are about 50/50 that the above is true .

as was said ... get a *real* adapter or one that fits the given parameters .
a friend fried his high-dollar HP laptop using a cheapo yakkaweewee AC adapter (6 dollar special) .

I have a couple nice E models and a couple not so nice....if ebay can't help.

MK3 and above have two usb ports. MK4 non-touch is my favored unit. (of the 29's) No TPM and 1.6, will run 2GB ram. (the non-touch)

Has anybody tried 2 GB ram in a E4 (they have 256 on the board like MK4/5)

I figured it was the power adapter as soon as I saw the rating on it, where could I find this fuse at on the board I take it.
The only good thing is the guy said he will ship me another one but he wants the old one back. Is there a schematic that shows the board in detail.

    1. Pull battery.
    2. Dis-connect power supply.
    3. Hold switch on for 20 seconds...repeat several times.
    4. Plug in power supply. (not the battery yet)
    5. [F2] [F9] [F10] (boot to bios, set to defaults, save)

That's rubber backlit keyboard. I have this exact unit with screen burns. A replacement lcd and a TSPCB and it's touchable. Cheap at half the price. I ran it a while ago (today) on 32bit LinuxMint 17.1 and XP dual boot.

A point: This Linux and lots of others must be loaded originally on a 29MK4 or 5....PAE issues otherwise, do all upgrades...then swap caddies.

Another point: When upgrading a while (weeks, months) after the install, do that in a MK4 or 5. Or PAE conflicts show up again.

It means Physical Address Extension whatever that is.

    FWIW.

I got a more correct power adapter a little low on the amperage and what do u know it fired right up, went to a boot up type of screen had to hit F1 and then it booted up to windows, but after that it did something with the screen I was on the web when all of a sudden the screen froze and faded to solid white, anyone got any ideas what that could be.

Thermal Pads IOW (in other words) HEAT.
    Bad Ram maybe.

I think the pads. Get pads. I don't care what others say Arctic silver is a patch not a repair. I recommend Fujipoly 1.5mm thickness.
This would work for three CF-29 for instance.
    http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1...ermal_Conductivity_60_WmK.html?tl=g8c487s1292

You have to take the bottom off anyway so might as well have the pads in hand. If existing pads are flexible they can be squished for more thickness but on a MK2 they are probably pretty dry so why waste the work.

For the arguers....this is my reasoning. Thermal paste dries. Pads stay flexible. Metal expands and contracts with heat. So PASTE eventually cracks. Pads stay flexible for years.

Jeff...why say something with 7 words if you can use 300?.... :)
