Hi all.
Well I got all issues with my win 7 pro sp1 install, with help of the forum.
I had an opportunity to acquire win 8.1 pro, so I decided to install it on the Cf 30. Well it went mostly good as follows
hotkey
hotkey appendix
new misc drivers
pc common drivers
FCL usb touchpanel
Intel 965 video drivers
gps had to disable temporarily add patch to registry then reboot , gps works.
Had to set my dual tablet/touchscreen to tablet in bios and reboot for it to work
has to disable Microsoft serial mouse in device driver to fix jumping mouse cursor
do not install touchpad drivers win 8 will work and on update win 8.1 will install synaptic driver by itself
sound card works great but I read that there is a better audio quality driver?? I really don't need it.
win 8.1 seemed to take care of everything else. Bluetooth, wifi etc etc.......![]()
My problem is the sd card driver?? I really need it as that is how I travel data between devices. all my other Toughbook's work just great.
The sd card reader worked flawlessly on the Cf 30 with xp pro, win 7 the in win 7 upgrade. IT WORKS and READ THE CARDS.
I installed the 32 bit xp pro vista and win 7 drivers and the ricoh drivers recommended, from CF 30 MK 1 MK2 MK3 and CF 31 WXMK4 in device manger, manual install, compatibility mode.
win 8.1 sees the driver and recognizes it as ricoh driver BUT it will not display when you plug it in or in widows explorer???
any info appreciated.........................................![]()
PS can any one verify it is an actual Ricoh chip on sd card PCB??????

Hi all
Just an update, the SD card reader in win 8.1 pro is still not working. The OS will see and river is enabled, but will not recognize any when card inserted,
I have tried 16 different drivers for a Ricoh SD Card reader. Not sure what model but the chip maybe: R5C822, R5C832, R5C475, R5C476II, among others.
Also from what I can read, it is like a combo chip, Pcie reader, pcmia card reader and SD card reader.
the only info I can find in win 8.1 pro is:
Device PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0822&SUBSYS_833810F7&REV_21\4&6ad4b7a&0&02F0 was configured.
Driver Name: sdbus.inf
Class Guid: {A0A588A4-C46F-4B37-B7EA-C82FE89870C6}
Driver Date: 06/21/2006
Driver Version: 6.3.9600.16408
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Section: SDHostRicoh_1
Driver Rank: 0xFF0001
Matching Device Id: PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0822&SUBSYS_833810F7
Outranked Drivers: sdbus.infCI\CC_080501:00FF2005
Device Updated: false
I will keep up the search as I have a lot of data on SD cards, which can easily travel between devices, and I really need this feature. Luckily I have other Toughbook's but this will be fixed an otherwise flawless machine.
I installed win 8.1 pro trying to keep may Toughbook current( which it is), but since I was given a one time volume license activation. I can not go back, or would have to spend $$$$
On a side note. I am not happy with win 8.1 pro. it feels like a forced choice upon us, because they do not make it easy to find any thing.
It does load faster BUT, not the blinding speed they claim???
The apps are but useless to me , desktop has a horrible layout. Win 7 with its quirks is waaay better.
Command prompt is hidden??? I was able to configure file explorer to show it in the file and menu bar up top after many try's, not sure why this way but it works. I consider
this a FATAL FLAW, this seems to be designed for barely knowledgeable users not IT or techies???
To shut the machine down you have to go thru 3 menus?? I finally used ctrl-alt -del and had to reprogram my software power button.
Any programs and shortcuts I use to personalize are gone next reboot.
just to find note pad, which will not show anywhere in the menus, I have to find file explorer and the go into windows to execute notepad, even if I put a shortcut on desktop it is gone next boot.
if the screen shuts down, when you tap the screen to turn back one, I get a big app page and a red square the with arrow asking to swipe, doesn't work , locks screen, have to reboot, so I just let power setting to keep laptop on for 1 hour.
Placement of all feature is horrible, too much looking thru menus, or going online to look for solutions.
On touchscreen when you tap it, you get a barely visible gray circle that fades, if you hold it get square, then menu options, disconcerting the mouse arrow the disappears, but if you barely tap touch pad the arrow is there where the circle was????
One good feature is it seems to run very stable and does not use as much memory as win 7: win 8.1 pro 768 MB average and win 7 pro sp1 1.4 GB average.
Overall it is in need of major revisions, I couldn't imagine trying to use this OS at commercial entities or trying to install hundreds of machines???
I will post other quirks as I find them, someone could benefit.
Any one with info on the SD card reader would be appreciated........................ -

As a work-around, will an SDHC to PC Card adapter work?
-
Hi all I have been busy but dedicated holiday time to try, no go!. Thanks to all who sent me info , apparently I am not the only one like this. I will try a new PCMIA card that I ordered, for reading SD cards, should be here soon.
It just seems that MS and manufacturer support for win 8 drivers is seriously lacking. I went to Ricoh site, Lenovo, HP, Toshiba and some others, Toughbook CF 30 MK 1 MK 2, CF 31 MK 3 from XP, Vista, win 7 pro and win 8, so far nothing works.
Still would appreciate any future info if someone ever solves this...................If I can in the future get a copy of win 7 pro I will go back, to expensive now....................
Thanks again..................................
Dec 7 2013..........................
Hi all, just small update, the generic PCMIA adapter works with SD card. solves my data problem. I can now travel data among cell phone, tablet and desktop, camera etc etc at home or work, as it also reads microSD with the SD adapter..
Microsoft is making a big deal in advertisement about using SD cards. BUT to me this is a FATAL FLAW as MS in win 8, what ever version is having this problem in a wide range of laptop models that use Ricoh R5C822,........ Lenovo, HP, and Sony among some complaints that can be found on internet forums.
On a side note the tablet/digitizer driver was getting flaky after a week of use, it would only come within 1/8 inch of where its was calibrated at( inconvenient constant calibrating), so I started and another afternoon(hours) of a drivers search. I found that a driver on another forum mentioned CF 30 and same problem, so I downloaded it and installed it. it is called as follows:
FCL USB PEN TABLET (SUS) Ver 1.0.1.0........Touchscreen Driver............................I am not sure what SUS means????:0
*For CF-30 with Touchscreen 1.0.1.0 543,461 bytes
tscreen_1.0.1.0_30_3_w732_d091540d081525.exe
It was http://pc-dl.panasonic.co.jp/itn/support/win7info4_1930.html, it is for CF 19 and CF 30 it is a win 7 driver, scroll down to Keyboard Mouse and Peripherals.

All I can say is Thank God I didn't downgrade to Winblows 8.
Personally, I think 8 is a bad idea because of the overhead. Maybe on a newer computer, but not on the 30.
I have 7 pro working perfectly with all hardware 100% including the encryption chip.
I have a tip for you though, when you get your machine setup and stable, back it up with clonezilla, then you can start over from the stable config if something happens. -
Jolly... You SAID IT! I do not know ANYONE who has W8 and likes it even remotely. They all cuss and swear and some have paid for the W7 transformation.
Also... DO NOT download IE11 or you will have a big surprise! -

I have talked many people through the uninstall process Blair.... LOL

Love the new avatar! -
Rick,
Is the "big surprise" a blank sheet in Explorer 11?
My neighbor uses it and hers went tango uniform. White screen no action.
Just curious...I do not ever use Explorer. -
I don't use Internet Exploder. It's a HUGE gaping security hole. A browser, directly tied into the base OS. What a boneheaded idea that was.
I use FF or Chrome. Actually the ONLY thing I use Internet Exploder for is my home surveillance cameras, because of the stupid ActiveX crap. Otherwise, no way Jose.
In fact, When I work on someone's computer for them, I remove all easy links to IE (obviously you can't get rid of it since it basically is part of windows) And I install FIrefox for them.
I used Netscape from day one, and before that it was Gopher, before that it was FTP to some site in finland to download 16bit dirty pictures. LOL -

Rick...This is the problem I am having . If I go in to edit a post or reply to a PM its a mess. Check out the picture below. The first line is a mess and the second line it took me 2 minutes to type correctly and it would not let me add any links , pictures, copy or paste anything...

I have always used IE as I need to use it for work. I upgraded (as did a lot of others I know) to find their email clients either didn't work at all or only had partial functionality. I rolled back to IE10 quickly. The look was cool.... But looks ain't everything. I have talked many people through the uninstall.... It's easy but not everyone knows how to uninstall a program.
Blair... So are you saying that in IE11 you lose the autocorrect function and instead it reverts to just underlining misspelled words? -

Here's a question, has any tried to boot from the SDHC Memory Card slot? I only have a 4GB handy here so I can not, yet, test it for myslef. But if so, I have a idea...
-
Ask Shawn.
-
No I have not tried, but you could try linux on one.
Is it listed in the bios boot order? If it isn't it probably won't work.
It will boot from a USB stick.
Look for a program called rmprepusb..Azrial likes this.
Cf 30 toughbook, install win 8.1 pro Qs?
