I have Mk2 that only runs on battery, power cord tested OK, resoldered power connecter on mother board, looking like MB is fried (this is my 2nd MB in this unit, 1st one the display blacked out and replacing MB fixed it, so now this , are the MB's pieces of sh** in these toughbooks?

don't know as much about the mk2 but the mk3 is a good deal as for the cpu swap to a core2duo is concerned. sometimes you can get a reasonable deal on the mk3's from buybest15 or buybest13 and then up the ram to 4gb pc2 5300 and get a hdd caddy and go for a samsung ide 160gb hhd or the 320 wd wd3200beve which works well. it adds up quick if you assemble the parts or if you luck up and find a complete unit and just add the ram, cpu, hdd. either way alot of the forum members that use the cf-51 core duo with upgrades are pleased with the performance. I've been fortunate so far with 6 of them.........Driller

I have had many MK1's and MK2's and never had any problems with them at all. Great laptop and as Driller said the MK3 is even better :D

I had this happen on a MK3 I got off eBay. Look on the bottom of the MB at the power connector and follow the + trace and look for a possible cold solder joint. On my Mk3 it was at choke, L103 as I recall. In fact the Mk3 uses two chokes and one was missing.
I wonder if there is a little bit of flex in this area if the power connector is pressed very hard, or the cord gets jerked.
Anyway, the issue was the same, ran on battery only, works great now!

John, that was it on mine also, except its labeled L810 ( Mk2 and Mk2LL boards). I just touched it with a probe and it fell right off the board. I'll probably messed it up when I try to resolder it, thanks
