    Hello All,

Sorry if this information is already in the forum but i was unable to search for the information and I am getting a lot of 404 errors recently

I was thinking about getting a CF-18 from one of the US ebay e-tailer selling the aussie telecom cf-18 (CF-18DHB22KA). I have a few questions about it before I get it for a few project i have.

    1) Do i just need to go get a plan jane usb external dvd rom to install XP, Vista, 7, or Freebsd on the toughbook or will i need to do something silly to get the CF-18 to boot from USB optical?

    2) Does anyone know where I can get a cf-18 mk4 or 5 for sub 500 because I rather have an viable upgrade path to vista or 7.

    3) Has anyone bought a cf-18 from laptopenterprise on ebay and would like to share the experience and condition of the toughbook they received?

    4) I have a standard copy of xp tablet 2005 (not panasonic recovery disk) and was just wondering if anyone actually installed tablet edition on a regular touchscreen?

    5) I kind of want to turn the cf-18 into a IR remote .... does anyone know if the CF-18 has an port or know of a hack that can be done to achieve this?

Thanks in advance for any help

    B.R.

    1) In general most newer USB drives will work great ,no need to purchase the Panasonic, I do have a couple older drives that are not bootable but will work after the o/s is installed
    2) No probably $700+
    4) Haven’t tried but most versions of vista have superior tablet features if that is what you want, there is nothing wrong with xp on these, and there will probably be issues on drivers if you install tablet o/s , but it’s possible
    5) IR was common on the older toughbooks that had w95 + w98 installed, but since xp has no support these models were optioned with Bluetooth instead

IR is supported in XP I have a few 28's with original XP and the IR was automatically detected and it connects to my older portable printers and PDA without a hitch. In XP it is called "Wireless Link" and there is a setup icon in control panel.

You can install the new OS from a USB Thumbdrive or USB HDD.

On the cf-18 there is a provision/slot for IR module.
