    Jeff,

My info on max ram upgrades comes from the unit’s reference manual.
As per the manual your mk-2 can accept 512mb extra only.
    That is the safe way.
I have read about adding 1gb to the mk-1 cf-29, but as per the manual in that case as well only 512mb extra is supported.
I have wasted a lot of money on ram upgrades for the 20 or so cf-28s I have owned.
Some of the time the laptops have had 512mb chips installed, with only 256mb being recognised.
Usually what works in one mk# is not compatible in others in the line.
I have 512mb of pc2100 ddr in my cf-18 mk-2, on top of the 256mb on board.
    My cf-18 mk-5 has a 1gb ddr-2 additional.

Can you share with us the specs of your 1gb chip?
It will probably be compatible with the early cf-29 ‘s as well.

BTW That looks like a nice clean wxp pro factory installation. :eek2:

Before PC2100 and PC2700 has max. of 512MB now they manufactured up to 1gb. Thats why on the specs has a max. capacity of 768Mb.

Like my CF-M34(1.0ghz), on the specs it has a max. of 768mb. I replaced the 512mb with 1gb and its 1.2gb now.

Hi. I too have a CF-18 and want to upgrade the RAM on it using this stick. I have never messed with a laptop before. Which way do I go in to get to where I can reach the DIMM slot? Through the bottom or through the keyboard? I don't want to unscrew a jillion screws just to find nothing.

    Thanks!

    Yes that will work.
The ram is under the speaker, on the bottom.
If you have a 900mhz or 1100mhz model.
    The mk-5 1200 model uses ddr-2 ram

Directly under the speaker? That's surprisingly convenient. Thanks!

Bump. I searched my exact model number CF-18BDAZXMM and this page says the Max is only 512 more. But the page I linked before says I can add a gig. Which is true?

The manual was published before 1 gb chips came out, that is why it states 512 max.
1gb pc2700 ddr 200 pin chips have been confirmed working by others on this forum.

My plastic RAM holder under the speaker had one side break off? How do I order a replacement for it? Anyone know the part number? Is this an easy fix?

I sure does not look to me like a do it yourself fix

This is going to sound Haywire, but if it was my laptop. I would use double sided tape under the chip, and foam tape on the top and jam the speaker cover back on
It should be reliable that way, and if you ever sell it, and they ask "whats with the foam tape"
You just say the Tomcat on the Toughbook forum recommended it as the foam provides better bass response

Maybe the speaker will get better sound. Two fixes with foam tape. thanks Tomcat I put in the 1gb stick and it stays in well enough to work and be seen so I might be okay as long as I check it after a fall or two.
