    Hello,

I recently purchased a CF-19 for my new business adventure. I had alot of thought into purchasing a laptop and being what I was going to use it for I decided the toughbook was the one for me.

I bought the CF-19 with no hard drive, it does have a caddy which is good. I have searched Ebay and found hard drives that I believe are the original's which are 80 and 160Gb. Unfortunalty I think those are way overpriced and hopefully I will not have to purchase one of those if need be!

My questions is to you Toughbook experts is can I use a hard drive besides the one from toughbook? If so which HD do you recommend?

THis TB has touchscreen and that built wan stuff!

Thank you for taking your time and advice.

No need to buy a special drive
Any sata 2.5" notebook drive up to 250GB should work great
One forum member reported problems with a 320gb drive on his newer cf30 so don't go above 250gb for now
The solid state drives will work as well
I have a 80 GB Seagate 7200 rpm drive in my cf19 running w7 and a mtron 16 gb solid state drive with windows tablet2005

Alex is right. (Of course!) Definitely go with a 7200rpm hard drive. Depending on how much space you need... Pick your drive. I like the 160GB hard drives personally as it suits most people fine. But if you are going to be storing lots of data... Go with the 250GB.

Welcome to the forum and good luck on your venture! :)

Little...t, There is no such thing that only an specific brand of harddrive for cf-19. Its a marketing strategy of some seller to buy their product as they know that toughbook is expensive and they want to sell their product for morethan a half of mark up. As the two gentlemen mentioned, any brand of 2.5 sata harddrive will work on your toughbook.

First of all, thank you all for your advice.

I have been wanting to get this laptop running to try it out. All the hype about them is making me eager.

Anyways I do not need anything too large but I would like to have the speed. I believe 160Gb would suit me well. hopefully I can find a 160Gb with a 7200.

I will see if I can get this thing running tonite if Fry's has what I need.

    Thanks Again

Sure the WD Scorpio Black series would be fine
The online computer store near to me that a deal with promotes Samsung drives as they stock the full line
I only buy the pata Samsung drive
I have seagates western digital and hitachi sata notebook drives
I always buy the 7200rpm models
I'm suprised that you could not just walk into a store and pick up a hard drive

If you do not need the new HD for a couple of days, check Newegg and Tiger Direct as they have some very good prices on SATA drives. They also have frequent sales and rebates that allow you to buy a 160-250GB 7200 for less than $75 and sometimes under $50. Just make sure when you are looking you only go after the 2.5" drives for a laptop.

yeh i found the same with ram. these con artists try and sell "toughbook" ram, and even though there may have been a specific type of ram that came with the toughbook, ive found (for my cf-18 at least) that any of the correct type will do.... pricks

You know... we like to harp on the vendors on eBay for marking up products, then reselling them as "ToughBook" upgrades... but you know, many of these guys ARE legitimate; they take the time to test the product so they KNOW it will work in a given laptop, and then mark up the product a bit to reflect that effort. They took the time to acquire that knowledge, it has value, and they're just trying to make an honest living.

Take our very own ToughBook mavin Rick, for example - he does EXACTLY that, only on a larger scale which encompasses the WHOLE ToughBook. Without HIS valuable knowledge, that ToughBook - no matter How NICE (or ugly) it may have started out, is just a doorstop. But by virtue of applying his extensive knowledge, it becomes a powerful and useful tool with great value.

Sure, we offer the knowledge for free, because knowledge is power and we like to see people empowered to do it themselves.

But those vendors do provide a valuable service; and there have been many times when I looked at something and said to myself "I KNOW I could find this elsewhere cheaper if I just did the research and found the correct part #"... and then clicked on the link cuz I was too d@mned tired to mess with it anymore.

I agree somewhat with what the other furball is saying ;)

Hard drives is a no brainier, you just have a possible bios limitation in the older Toughbooks to worry about, and you have two types of interfaces sata on newer models and pata on older

Ram , well that can be an issue on the older models , especially on the cf-28’s
I have bought ram in the past from sellers that know what they are selling
I learned that after buying incompatible modules from sellers that don’t know about the quirks that some toughbook models have

Now if you educate yourself before buying, and this forum is the place , well you can save yourself some grief and money too

Thanks go out to the past forum contributors over the past few years,
which included two Panasonic trained Toughbook technicians

Forum members have come and gone , but are still remembered here by their excellent informative postings

Well... I agree with the furball too. (I like the new avatar by the way.) There are a few (very few) of the resellers on ebay that I would trust. And they post here usually... A few don't but I have dealt with a lot/most of the sellers on ebay that deal specifically with Toughbooks. About half of them deal with Toughbooks only because they can buy them cheap, can run stock photos and sell them as refurbished even though they haven't really done any work to them... They load the OS at most.

What STILL grinds me are the sellers who use our hacks but never give back to the forum here. And you can tell who they are. They are the ones who buy bulk AC Port covers for $1.96 and sell them for $8.95 plus $7.85 shipping. They know who they are.

I can count on one hand the amount of sellers on ebay that I have personally dealt with that I trust 100% that the auction will be exactly like how they describe it. If anything... They under promise and over deliver. But then that's what keeps people coming back!

Thanks for the props on the Avatar - I've had that languishing on my HD since... oh, 3 computers ago, easy. It's THE FIRST LOLCAT, BTW...

Anyhoo... something about Alex's response to Greg in that other thread seemed to fit... so I decided it were time fer a change of scenery. ;)

As for the leeches... Yeah, I hate them too... but the suckage part is... that's part of GIVING. To give freely means just that; giving without passing judgement on how what's given is used. If you can't do that... best to keep it to yourself, cuz it's just gonna eat you up inside, and poison the spirit of giving.
