Hi I'm John and I'm new to the toughbook world, i have been lurking around for a few days trying to read up on info and get an idea of what I'm getting my self into haha and I'm liking the amount of work that can be done to these laptops and the community behind them. Now comes my question, I have the opportunity to get either the cf-29 or the cf-19, i like them both on paper and the 29 appears to have some better performance possibilities but my main question is are there any major pit falls with either machine? or are they both pretty good machines? the only thing i have come across in my search is that the cf19 has to use an external disc drive and for what I'm going to use it for that wont be a problem all the programs ill be using are downloaded.
thanks in advace

I think you may mean CF-29 VS CF-18???
The CF-19 is a WHOLE entire generation newer than the CF-29 and will out-perform ANY CF-29 regardless...
Yes, they do NOT have optical drives... The CF-19 and CF-30 came out at the same time. They are up to MK6 CF-19's now which have a 2.6GHz i5 in them and are more comparable to the CF-31.
I can explain more on the phone if you want to call me
Thanks! -
Thanks for the quick response, i have a another question about the cf-19 whats the limit for ram that you can up grade it to or is there one, i read that the 29's had a limit so I'm not sure on this one? The cf-19 i was looking at said that it had 1.06 ghz processor which is why i though the 29 would have better performance as it was 1.3ghz.

CF-19 Tablet - ToughWiki
You may have gotten this from Rob already.
Judging by your forum name you will be using this outside. The MK3 and up have 1,000 nit screens and better for day-lite view-ability. The WIKI has it, I won't repeat it. CF-29 max out as 500 I think with aged screens in the way.

EDIT:Missed the bit about the CF-29MK2. My friend you need to do some reading and forget the CF-29 if you are using this for work. The minimum would be a CF-30MK1 with upgraded touchpanel (1,000 nit) or CF-19MK3 and up. Also if you are using this for GPS the stock OEM on a CF-19 or CF-30 will serve you well in the boondocks. My opinion. I use a CF-19MK4 or CF-30MK1 in my squad. Just saying.
About the reading .....compare 1.06 Core 2 Duo with that 1.3. Good luck. -
Another drawback to CF-29 is PATA hard drives.

CF-29 Pentium mobile 1.2GHz to Pentium mobile 1.6GHz
CF-19 Intel Core Duo U2400 1.06GHz (Centrino 2) . Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 1.06GHz (Centrino 2) . Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 1.2GHz vPro (Centrino 2) . Intel Core i5 540UM 1.2GHz -
what all these guys are saying.. I am typing this from my CF29, just bought a CF19 today, and it is another world.. the screen is nicer, brighter, CF19 is mu...uch faster than my CF29. I even have the 1.6GHZ MK5 CF29, and the CF19 is a MK1.. also you can painlessly install a SSD disk in the CF19 wich is the most bang for buck you can get performancewise..
only "downside" to the CF19 is the size of the keyboard, and the arrow keys are just ridicoulus.. but this is what you get if you want a 10" laptop.. I have quite normal size hands for a 30yr old, and it is just a matter of getting used to the keyboard. but I love the portability.. -
If it is a 19 vs 29 I would jump on the 19. If you can get at least a Mk2 or higher.
-
GHz isn't everything these days... (as everyone has said)
CF-19s's STARTED with only 1.06GHz Core DUO (That is a DUAL core)... will outperform ANY 1.6Ghz Centrino.
The latest CF-19's went to a 1.2GHz i5 (I own one) then to 2.5Ghz i5 and then to 2.6GHz i5.
I have TONS of CF-19's in stock too if you are interested just call me -
I agree on getting a CF30 with 1000 nit. If your only choices are the CF29 or a CF19, the CF19 wins for me. Although I would not care for the small screen.
The CF29's are great machines but a used CF30mk2 is so much better, A future SSD upgrade is a must in my mind. Especially since prices are dropping so much. -
what all of them said, CF-19 runs loops around the 29, and is much more upgradable with an SSD and/or memory. They keyboard is something like 88%, but you get used to it. I did, my wife did (grumbling, after her Macbook Pro died) and even Rob here at the forum did.
Amount of ram on the 19 is always enough for regular use. It's not that you are going to photoshop/indesign on them. 2Gb is nice and if my memory serves me right all of them can be expanded to 4Gb, although the 32-bit windows versions won't use more than 3Gb.
Good thing about the 19 is that it's much more compact and portable. It fits easier in backpacks and it's lighter. That is, if you want to take it with you and use it outside, but your name suggest such use. -
thank you for all the info guys i got the cf-19, yes ill be using it out side not for work but for play but that's one of the reasons i was looking at it was the size and weight was much less than the 29 and the larger hard drive, so I'm glad that it is actually a more powerful machine.

What model did you get? Look on the bottom or in the bios and give the full model number CF-19XXXXXX. What kind of play do you have planned for it? Maybe we can give you some ideas for it.
-
nice one! welcome here btw.
What kind of play did you get it for? Geocaching?
+1 for the model number -
The CF-29 is not THAT big. It could be worse:

haha, ordinateur portable, yeah right - with a matching ATV to carry it.
from the model year of that IBM (Pentium II era), they could have easily get an early CF-28, for a LOT less volume & weight -
hehehe, that is an expensive case from Hardigg (now Pelicase). Those where the days when you had the full power of a desktop everywhere with you. You couldn't use it very well in the field, but when it was in a gym or school it was functional....
I'm looking for a field desk from Hardigg like this one: http://www.apgcases.com/field desk.htm But not at full retail price, I have $300 max for a decent one or $500 for a NIBbut they are hard to find in Europe and shipping from other continents is expensive.

I will get you guys the exact code when it gets here in a couple days but my general plans mod wise would be back lit keyboard and gps for sure to start, i know it doesn't have a battery so i have to get one of those as well. now i have herd some bad experiences with the rubber keyboards and not a whole lot on the other keyboards, are both of them water resistant and are the rubber ones as bad as i hear?
now for the play, i want gps for road trips and offroading, so street maps and topo map program and sense it doesn't have a drive i want a program that you can either download it all, or install on cd but then don't have to use the cd to run it anymore, or are there any other options? so that i can use it on the go. what do you guys use?
and I will wait to see how it looks and it is not high on my list but i was considering painting it as i saw an OD green one online a while back that looked incredible, i know painting them can be kind of a touchy subject on here but my main concern is I read a couple times about heat issues, is that just in general or using it in the sunlight and it heats up, just dark colors, what was the story with the heat issues? -

The other two primary players are Microsoft Streets and Trips and the Delorme Streets. I have used both, and at the moment I think I have both on my laptop too. I remember one beign a SERIOUS PITA to input the address directions exactly the way it wants.
For navigation in the backwoods or on the street, I stick with Garmin products myself. I tend to use their units, and not bother with the GPS in my TB. Their software is just worlds beyond the rest. I have not personally used their PC based navigation, but have heard nothign but praise for it. Even so, their PC (and Mac) software platform to plan trips and send to their GPS units is amazing.
Google Maps is familiar, and has a lot of potential. But it falls flat when it comes to trip planning and waypoints. You can't send detailed routes to GPS units. For geocaching, probably okay.
Now Google Maps, a WWAN internet connection, and your Toughbook... -
the code on the bottom is CF-19CHGAXBM
i need a battery and i was looking at this one
Amazon.com: Panasonic Oem Part Number Cf-Vzsu48u Laptop Battery, 5200Mah (replacement): Electronics
or this one
Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 Battery CF-VZSU48U CF-VZSU48 - Notebookparts.com
have you guys bought from either of them? -
I usually get the 18 or 19 battery from ebay, but if you do make sure it's an original battery.
The amazon link shows the batteries to avoid, aftermarket ones.
The other link has original picture. -
So the not book parts one is OK?

If it is what they are advertizing in the picture, it may be. Give Rob a shout to see what price he has on new batteries.

The Wacom digitized models are SO AWESOME for this! I have not figured out yet if it is variable pressure sensitive... I have to get it fully integrated with the right drivers first. -
you'll have a big problem with toughbooks if you'll use their TN screens for photo editing: limited color space, color uniformity and bad viewing angles.
I'm sometimes angry at them when watching a dark movie or some pictures when if you change your position a bit, the colors wash out.
if you use an IPS/VA external monitor though, then it's ok.
you should max the memory though and get a SSD in there. -
I'll have to see if I can find my old G.R.I.D. machine and post a pic for you.

My Macbook that I use for photo editing was recently stolen. So while I had no intent to use this for that, well it will suffice for now. It is still a better choice (perhaps) than the Powerbook G4 I have sitting here.... At least the Wacom digitizer is nice!

So i have decided i will probably go with Delmormes topo north for mapping software i just need info on the GPS kit, and someone mentioned installing on virtual drives so that i dont need the CD to run the software, i have searched around with little results on how to do this can anybody point me in the right direction on both?

you can use this: DAEMON Tools Lite
