I just bought 256 RAM memory from eBay for my Toughbook CF-27. However, when I put it in the laptop, it isn't recognized. Does anyone know why? Do I have to go into the BIOS and activate it manually? Any and all help is appreciated, thank you.

Toughbooks are very fussy about the ram you need for them to work..
For the 27 it needs to be only PC66 low density.
Your best bet is to deal only with a dealer that knows toughbooks and what ram that is guaranteed to work in them.
I have had good luck with:

    http://www.kahlon.com/

You will pay more from them, but they stand behind what they sell..

    I have only had one cf-27, a 300 mhz model with 64 mb ram on-board .
The max ram I could install was 128 for a total of 196mb, pc 66 and pc 100 will worked equally well.
If you have a 500mhz model you might be able to go higher, but i'm not sure.
    What model do you have?

The 500 MHz 27 will handle up to a 256mb additional memory module.
The specs call for 256 pc100 144 pin.
What do you have, that did not work?
I have had problems with my cf-28s finding compatible 256 and 512 chips.
Sometimes 8 chip/side works, depending on model and sometimes 4 chip/side works.
If you were only adding 128, there would be no problem at all, but the 256’s can be a problem.
This ram is almost impossible to find in local stores now, so eBay or online is your best bet.
Make sure you can return it if it is not computable or have them guaranty that it is compatible.

    Does anyone here have a 500mhz cf-27 with 256 ram and can share a part # ?

Yes the ram has to be put in at an angle an wiggled a bit to go in properly.
You have purchased the correct 16 chip ram for your model.
