Hi all,
just got my first toughbook and would like to start a thread for the cf28 mk1 toughbooks.
my first experiences with it are very good, but i also have a few problems.
despite scouring the web and the forum for drivers,i still cannot get the touchscreen working in winxp (its enabled in the bios and will work in win2k) but all my attempts have failed so far,i have only one unknown device in the manager so i guess that it is the touchscreen.
Also the internal ram is only 128mb so i guess i can only install an extra 256 in the slot or can i upgrade the internal ram?
also the ram compatability worries me,will only panasonic ram work or any pc100 sodimm.
all information gratefully received.rob

the unknown device in device manger is ur hotkey,
download hotkey manager and install then download hotkey device drive then click on unknow device and click update drive point to the hotkey device driver you downloaded and it will start too install........
for touchscreen download mouse/touchscreen driver go into device manager and click on psmouse and then update driver and update using the mouse driver downloaded.........
about the ram best use everest or some other software like pc wizard 2007 and check the ram support to see how much ram it will actual support also it will tell you the specs you need for ram so you can look around and buy it using the info you get from the wizard..........
goodluck -
First off... dj is correct... It's either your hotkeymgr or video driver in Device Manager. Click on it in device manager and tell it to update driver then point it to the folder containing the driver. Same with the touchscreen driver... Except you have to open your mouse driver. Click on your mouse in device mgr then update driver... Point it to the folder containing the touchscreen driver and update. You don't just download an EXE file and hit "enter".
There is a thread around here somewhere with drivers and links to drivers... If you can't find them there or they don't work... Your laptop is toast on a stick! -
thanks dj your a star,
done the hotkey thing and now no more exclamations in dev manager, also i worked out the touchscreen driver i just had to tell windows that i will chose the driver and not let windows tell me which one was best.
working like a dream!!!! no toast on a stick for me toughbook.
cheers guys. -
No worries,
were all here toooo help!!!!!!!!! -
ok so now i got it working right i decided to take it apart (as you do) and i followed modlys great tip on accessing the internal pcmcia slot.
when i inserted my wifi card in there and set up the cardbus in bios ,windows xp detected the new card as another display adapter (silicon motion lynxem)???
i tried reinstalling the drivers etc but to no avail.
any clues guys? -
That's strange to say the least. What brand/model wireless card do you have?
You may have to install the driver manually, kinda like you did with the touch screen (Go into the driver selection, and select "have disk", etc), and perhaps it'll kick in. I know mine was being a pain in the nuts at first, but with another issue. I let it select it's own driver, and it took over the drivers and utility for my other card. Shoulda paid attention there eh? I reinstalled the proper driver/utility for the cardbus card, and everything was fairly normal again.
So I suppose if manually selecting the driver doesn't do the trick, you might have a funny card. -
I think they make a specific Cisco card for the internal slot... Though I'm sure many would work.
-
yeah thanks modly and toughbook,
i tried an old dell ethernet card in the slot and it works just fine,so i guess it is my wireless card(dlink dwl650) .i know the slot can take a cardbus card from other posts so i just need to find the one i want that will work.
by the way is the mini pci modem easy to remove,i have not found any tutorials for this.
cheers -
Yes... VERY easy to remove. It is the one with the smaller connector... Usually toward the center of the laptop. Then just fold back the lead coming form the jack. You can then put in your wifi card. I wrote a how-to on putting in an antenna but I deleted the pics off my server accidentally.
Again... Very easy! -
I have a Mk1, and I've noticed that the hidden PCMCIA slot seems to work fine with 16-bit cards, but iffy with 32-bit cards. I think the controller's only a PCMCIA 2.X device, but I haven't been able to find much documentation on this particular Ricoh controller.

My old CF-25Mk3 had similar issues- in win98/Linux cardbus worked fine, but in win2k it kept complaining it couldn't start the device. -
yeah thanks bob you maybe right, i think im gonna pop a bluetooth card in there and see what happens and use the mini pci for my wifi,as others have done, seems to be the logical choice.
-
I've got a Compactflash BT card on the way- I'll pop it in a CF/PCMCIA adapter and see if it works in the hidden slot. It's definitely a 3.3v 16-bit card, so it SHOULD work.
I'll post back here with updates.
I think I'll try finding the right drivers for my old USB2 card and see if I can force windows to load the right drivers for it in the hidden slot. -
it should work fine, i currently have the cisco card in there at the moment, but was thinking of putting bluetooth into it.........
about the pcmcia slot i think it is a 16bit not 32 but i can be wrong about that.....
