I have a 800mhz 28 thats been funky the last couple of days. I flip the power switch and nothing...flip it again...a third time and maybe. If it does power up it boots and loads the OS and runs fine until I bump it or the like. Ok stay with me... if it does not power up with the power switch as described above the only other method I have found is to slam the handle back into the frame...and it lights up, powers on and runs fine until I bump or jostle the unit at which time beeps one long tone and shuts down. The hard drive seems fine and checks out when I hook it up to another unit.

    Any ideas?

    Edit:

May have figured it out. The unit functions fine in bios with jostling, bumping and such...it must be the hard drive.

Edit: Scratch that last statement, it just powered off. :confused2:

Have you checked the 2-pin connector by the min-pci slot under the hard drive? You probably thought of this already, but it acts like some connector is loose. I'd try to double check any connector that might have been jiggled during an open case session - power switch, battery, LCD connectors, etc.

You don't say how many ways you may have tried starting. Try powering on with various combinations of AC with and without battery in, battery alone, daughter board removed, etc. Just get down to the simplest system and see if something makes a difference.

    Hope something helps.

Thanks! Connections all appear solid, gave em a jiggle to be sure. Your right...Im going break it down and reattach one thing at a time and see what happens.

I'd also check the contacts on the on/off switch. I can't imagine a normal tear-down would bend the contacts but it would be worth a look.

I would also bank on Ken's idea too. It's one or the other for sure.

Thanks TB, I will try your check next. All connections mini pci, lcd, two pin power are fine. Pulled the mini pci boards..no change, tried 4 different batteries, without batteries and two different power supplies...still no change. The power switch is working every time...but if I give the machine a shake down she goes.

Im gonna open the case and take a closer look at the power switch, poke around and see if I notice anything out of place.

Ive never had to deal with a bad mobo... if that was my problem I would not get into bios...correct?

Good call, TB. I was focused on connectors, forgetting the simplest, that the switch would have contacts as well. Tapping at the on/off switch rather than a hard bang might show if the wires are loose in the switch itself. Simplest is always best.

Ya, I started tapping at various locations to see what would happen. Sure enough, when I tapped the case around the power switch it would turn off and on. I opened up the case and found that the negative and positive wires were pinched against the switch housing and the wire insulation had just enough ware to cause the problem. I put new wrap around the wires and rerouted them. Reassembled the unit powered up and no more problem.

The wires must of gotten accidentally rerouted when I changed out the speaker.

    Thanks TB and Klboo!
