I noticed that a 12" screen from a cf-28 with a 600 processor is different than a 12" screen from a cf-28 with a 800ghz. Is that always the case? How about the model with the 1ghz? Is it the same as the 800? I just removed the old hinges but is it common practice for people to drill a little hole so it lines up? Have you noticed that not one person(ebay) that sells parts for toughbooks knows the difference between the screens(even with 12"-13.3)?

Are you talking abou the little hole above the F4 key? That is for the light sensor that can be equipped on some Toughbooks. Nobody drilled that... They were manufactured that way.
Yes... The screens on the 600s (Mk1) are different than those on the 800 (Mk2) & 1000 (Mk3) models. Some of the later 600 screens are the same as on the Mk2 & Mk3 models... Depending on when they were built.
The hinges on the 600s and on some of the 12" screen models are different than others. But they are all swappable and will work. You just want to make sure that is you have a light sensor that you have the correct hinge installed.
There are many sellers that know the difference. But as you are probably finding out... There are many sellers that will say anything to sell what they have up for auction. -
I ordered a 13.3" inch screen and what I received was a 12" for a 800 when I needed one for a 600. The hinges on the 800 screen did not fit correctly on the 600. It looked like I could drill a hole on each hinge to make it work. The problem is so many guy hack the crap of these machines that you don't know what the heck your getting. owning one of these laptops is like owning a Ferrari. Parts are expensive and you always have to go out of town to find them. I like my stuff factory original when I first get it so I know what I am getting. Or just buying stuff from people know what they are selling. I just used the old hinges and undid the wire a bit and it fit fine. Now I get the dvd/cd drive I ordered and hope its for the right computer(they say its for a Cf-28) and slap xp on before sale time. Then I can order a CF-30.

If you are talking about the little bump where the hinge fits, just dremel it off.
-
-
Wait, wait... wait! You don't have to Dremel anything! The 600 hinge cover uses only two screws in the back... This works fine on the 800 & 1000 units... You just cover up two of the screw holes. There is NO need to drill anything.
What "Little bump" are you speaking of? -
The nubs that fit into detents on the hinges. I believe there were some post about them. Not the cover TB the hinge itself.
-
If we're talking about the same thing... The hinge cover with the two screw holes on the back should fit over that. I've never had a problem with any of the hinge covers swapping back and forth... I'm pretty sure I have seen/used them all.
