why do I have to upgrade my BIOS on the CF-30MK1 to run Windows 7 and on another one of my CF-29MK5 and MK4 Windows 7 runs perfectly with no changes to the BIOS from factory specs?

If by "run Win 7 perfectly" you mean "without the Aero interface" then sure... The BIOS update is to provide DirectX support for the Aero interface.
