So the idea of putting a USB hub inside the Optical Bay didn't work out..
I basically didn't know where to get 5v from for powering it.

So, what I ended up doing was, since I don't use the REAR USB ports (mainly due to breaking things that I have had plugged into it when I forget they are there). I modded in a 4pin mini USB to connect to my ALFA 1W WiFi Adapter without its shell, and a FEMALE port to plug in my AIRPCAP adapter.

Also, since I don't really use PCMCIA or EXPRESSCARDs, I decided that the best/easiest/possible only way to mount antennas was to MOD the optical bay door for the 3 RPSMA adapters I need to use.

    LOOKING FOR OPINIONS PEOPLE!!!

GOOD LORD! SERIOUSLY!?!?! How is that in any way practical? It's cool, but I already know that with my lifestyle (and probably everyone's here)... all the moving around WILL break something off.... :/

I hope you didn't take it all the way apart, mod it, etc... With the battery installed.... :O

    PRACTICAL?
    Yes!!!

Both the adapters would have to be plugged in somewhere... Side or back, and I like NOT having the back open UNLESS needed.
Plus, having them external leads to the question, WHERE do I put em when moving around and HOW do I mount them???
I thought about going up and out the top of the LID, but that's not gonna happen...

    Rick,
Battery in, but with a shiv between it to not make contact.
As for breaking stuff off, THAT'S WHY I BLOODY DID IT INTERNAL!!!!
When you use a $700 AIRPCAP adapter that is made of PLASTIC, you find a way to protect that bugger, what better place than INSIDE a Toughbook?
I gotta find some caps to cover the RPSMA plugs though....

Plus before I get all liquored up and jump on my Toughbook, I'll make sure the antennas are not screwed on... ;)

Why not to use the USB port on CN30. It is on page 25 of schematic of cf-30 toughbook. With this all of your external port are free.

You mean the like when I posted a few times before asking about THAT possibility and got NADA and ZILCH from the community?? :)

Don't have the manual with me, but wouldn't I have to make a special cable?
Or was that for a different model?? Don't recall...

    @gmgfarrand.
We're not always that fast around here. If your question had been something like "CF-30 internal USB port?" instead of "CF-30 Find an internal 5V?" Teo would have been on it like a chicken on a June Bug. :D

As far as looks and pure geek factor, I would say it is pretty much off the scale. However, I think sombody from the FCC, CIA, MIB, or other alphabet agency may be on their way to "visit" with you shortly. :D

Considering the antennaes can be removed when not in use, durability shouldn't be too much of an issue but it all depends on how you normally use it. I'm sure you considered that in your design. Personally, I would break it because mine gets pretty much thrown in a rucksack or worse on many occasions.

So, what are you going to use it for anyways? (Or have the alphabet boys made that classified information already?)

WIFI and WiFi Pentesting for clients..
Already showed (with permission of business owners) the folly of whoever installed WiFi at businesses that implemented WEP or weak WPA/WPA2 passwords.

As for durability, I used to have the USB WiFi mounted on the lid of a netbook, and then pigtails running off of it to antennas on tripods and crap, but it was like carrying around a dead octopus, cables swinging and what not.
Now all I have exposed is the RPSMA connectors, and if you are hitting the side hard enough to bust em, you are hitting it too hard in general, plus the connectors/cables are on average about $2...

I just got thread connectors to help protect em.
