I was on the way to a job site yesterday and my screen started flickering. Computer shut down abruptly. Would not turn on. Was plugged in to Lund charger. Swapped battery. Same. Got back to motel. Used regular charger. No good. What should I do. I have another cf-30 at home. But it has no hard drive. Can I just swap my hard drive with win 7 into it?

What are the full model numbers?

You should be able to swap caddies with just minor tweaking.

    Years ago I put a mk3 win7 drive in a mk1, but it was a fresh install.
I still think it will be ok.
I would boot to safe mode first and then redo the drivers in device manager.

Check ram first. If running two sticks it's easy peasey hardware check.

If ram is fine then you have a problem.

Swapped ram. Nothing. Used one at a time in different slots. Nothing. No lights come on.

Swap the drive to the mk1 and it will boot with maybe a couple of minor driver errors, make sure to up the bios to the Win Vista bios also. Then check drivers in device manager and fix that, done deal. :D I just did it the other day.

Wife sent my mk1. Just for sh!ts and giggles I plugged the mk3 back in and it came to life. What could be the problem? I also put the hdd with win 7 into the mk1 to see if it would run and it turned on but nothing came on screen. I'm perplexed.

    Odd.
    I have used a win7 install from a mk3 in both mk1 and mk2's on multiple occasions.
I have seen where hard drives take a dump and the laptop will not even boot.
On certain mk CF29's the BIOS was not compatable with certain hard drives.

For some odd reason, motherboards become "confused". Usually a power pull reset cures it. Although once in a while the cure was to restore the drive using the factory recovery disk. I think the recovery disk either rewrites the BIOS or rewrites the SLIC and ACPI tables. Just guessing on that.

    hmmm ...

i have also seen HDDs that would not boot and the machine would only progress so far into the initialization screen and then go black .
i have seen corrupted MBRs (many times caused by a virus or the surface of the platter going bad) in many instances .
a look at the HDD on/with a linux machine might show a problem .
there are several tools available .

in the case of surface degradation , a machine may boot ok once in a while .
the real fix is to replace the HDD .

aaannnddd ... excuses are like ...
    however , i shall digress .
    :p :twitchy:

not saying it is the problem but it is a good place to start once a couple of other options have been exhausted .
(and if you don't have access to a 'nix machine)

Well this is a good time to pick up a SSD. Since the holidays prices have dropped a lot. Check out newegg or Amazon. The prices below are what I have seen them sell for in the last few weeks...sometimes even lower.
    120gb - $40
    240gb - $60
    480gb - $100

Did it again. The battery light was blinking red. It was plugged in. Not charging. Screen started flickering so I turned it off. Won't do anything now. Tried different power supply. To no avail. I'm out of town again with no extra parts. What do I do?
