Was plugging in an xtrnl HD (self powered) to the CF-29 USB port. This caused an instant complete shut down crash (black screen) and power shut off. Computer did manualy restart with no problems but the USB port is completely DOA. Device mngr still sees the USB and sez all is well, but it is DOA. Drivers do reinstall but USB is still DOA.

Using the card slot I am able to use a USB/firewire card and the USB works fine although it's only vs1.0

Question 1: Any suggestions? It's not the connector.

Question 2: If it comes to this, can it be fixed W/O replacing the MOBO?
Anybody got one just in case? 1.3GHz

Question 3: Can the card slot be upgraded to be used as USB 2.0 - the
card is rated USB 2.0 already but operates at only 1.0

Question 4: As a bkup plan, will the mouse port work as a full function USB
port if I use a USB adapter? Or a serial port?

Question 5: I do have a G/J docking station (not cheap) being offered
to me that has built in USB port. Might that solve the problem?

Many thanks to anyone who may spend a moment to help with this.

Might have fried a picofuse or something like that... a USB port is designed only to handle 500mA current draw. However, some HDs draw more than that on initial startup (motors draw many time its rating on startup).

I'm thinking that Windows sees the USB port because the controller is still ok, but because your USB devices aren't getting any power, they won't get recognized.

Download the schematic for your CF-29 here: (it's my mirror of Rob's site)
    http://www.toughwiki.com/index.php?title=Mk_2_Service_Manuals

and see if there's a picofuse in there somewhere... ?

I fried the usb controller once on a cf-m34
In that case the controller failed , But I still had 5v on the usb port
I confirmed that with finding a schematic for the usb ,and checking for voltage

I never fixed the problem, instead I ordered the docking station and It worked on usb.
So I think on Question 5 ,you would be ok, But that is an expensive remedy.

First, thanks Cunuckcam for the quick reply. The HD was connected to a its own pwr supply and was spun up and running when I connected it to the usb port so I would think that there should have been no motor surge to contend with? I do like your picofuse suggestion though and will look into that ASAP. Thanks for the link as well.

Thanks Tomcat57 for the quick reply. Yeah, the docking station will be a last resort and judging from the Emails I'm getting to buy one, that looks to be the solution - which is encourging albeit expensive - but still cheaper than another MOBO from what I'm seeing. I did'nt pay that much for the whole dang computer. I've gotta check out Cunuckcam's suggestion before I do anything else though.
    Thanks again.

I would also send a PM to Ohlip... He is really good at finding the fuses and troubleshooting power problems. Even TBTech might have some insight as well. Let us know what you do find out so that others can benefit as well.

You can send the unit into panasonics national service center and they can repair it, 130 diag fee, 35 shipping, and probally a 195 board repair fee and they will also quote any extra parts that are missing, inop, or cracked.

Yikes. Might as well buy a CF-29 off eBay instead!

You gotta buy your own notebook? Thats horrible. I hope you don't have to pay for the wireless broadband or anything.

Thanks to Wall Street, this fiasco has even hit us. No raises next year, no new cars. Wall Street affected the State, and we are a (small) state agency.

Good luck to you. I hope you get this issue resolved with your 29. I wish I could help out somehow.

I have the same problem w/mine. Device manager says all is well. Disassembled enough to see that it appears solidly connected to the MB... I'll have to look into the fuse possibility...

mrbungle, I see in your signature a: "Flush Mount USB 2.0/Bluetooth PCMCIA Card". That sounds like a good solution too. Can you please provide some details on what brand/model, etc?

    Thanks,
    Rick

OK... the card was a good solution for a thumb drive, but can't provide enough power for my external drive. I guess I need to revisit fixing the USB port. There's no power at the port, although the OS thinks it's there and working. I've seen references here to a "pico fuse". I looked through the schematic and service manual for my CF-29 (ETPGBKM), but am still not sure where the fuse is. Can anyone please give me an idea where to look, and how much disassembly is required.

    Thanks,
    Rick
