I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM. The slot currently holds a 256MB DDR PC2700 module.

I looked on the Crucial website, and using their system selection tool there are two choice, "CF 18 Pentium 4" and "CF18 DDR2".

A 1GB DDR PC2700 module, from the first choice, costs about £40.
    A 1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 module, from the second choice, costs about £13.

Obviously I would prefer the cheaper one, but I don't know anything about modern/DDR2 laptop memory...do you think it would work in my CF18 mk2? Does DDR2 physically fit into DDR slots?

The full description of the cheaper module I want is:
    1GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    CT908392
    Module Size: 1GB
    Package: 200-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
    Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

DDR2 is not physically compatible with DDR; it's a COMPLETELY different memory structure and will not fit in a DDR slot. Its architecture is equivalent to running two modules of DDR RAM in DUAL CHANNEL mode.

Try looking on memoryx.net or kingston.com for the specs for your PC; then shop NewEgg or Microcenter.com for price. If NewEgg is not much more, go with them - their customer service is second to none if you have issues.

Nope, not even on the same planet...

In addition, DDR2 is not compatible to your unit. It is only compatible for MK4 and MK5 unit. You need pc2700, 200pin, DDR for MK2. If you could search a bet it is already been discussed here.

I hunted around recently for a 1 GB SODIMM for my Mk2 CF-18. I bought a brand new Kingston KVR333S0/1GR (which is a DDR-1 [aka 'just plain DDR'] 200 pin SODIMM) and my system now happily works with 1.28 GB of ram in it. CPU is the bottleneck now.

    Craig.

PS. Initially the new RAM didn't work right and was crashing the machine, but I think it actually triggered a Windows Xp error which could have caused MS to issue a patch as when the machine ran long enough to grab updates, the problem went away.

I don't think that Microsoft issues patches so that the incorrect RAM works in your laptop.

    See DDR1.....
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR1

I see DDR and DDR2... But only incorrect associations with DDR1.... Or someone's whatever....
