Oh well, I was calibrating the 13.3 XGA touchscreen and noticed cracks in the upper left corner. When I was touching the other points it was singularly unresponsive. I then noticed the crack extended diagonally from left to right ending about mid-screen. I guess I didn't look carefully earlier but it's almost unnoticeable unless the screen is pressed.

So I'm in the market for an XGA 13.3 touchscreen assembly with or without housing.

    :(

I doubt if I could afford one from Panasonic.

I will probably buy another system for parts or if I'm lucky enough to locate just the lcd assembly with touchscreen. I will pull it apart Tuesday and see what I can see.

    OK... I'm done laughing now.

Do NOT call Panasonic about the 4-7 year old laptop that you own :D

Where do these people come from?

Your best bet is eBay, and more than likely your better bet is to get a parts machine (Though sometimes deals can be had for just a screen). Is the cracked unit a 600, 800 or 1000? If it's a 600 it can be picky about the screen a little (gotta solder some jumpers to use a 12" on motherboard that came with a 13"), but everything else should be dandy.

I'm still laughing about the Panasonic phone call idea though... Sorry Terminus, I know you're in pain with a cracked screen... but the random tech help from the Dell section is killing me inside :D

Lol. Just FYI, a new 13" touchscreen from panasonic runs $300 - $330 depending on which one you have (2 different ones). It's highly likely you'll find it cheaper elsewhere. If/when you find one, we can give some pointers on replacing if you want.

    edit: I'm assuming for a 28. For a 29, it's closer to $210

:notworthy: I guess we're supposed to be thankful that people from the other forums are viewing our posts, ready to jump in with a pithy comment, getting to the heart of the problem, and saving us knuckle-draggers from stumbling around without a clue.

How do these people get the levels of Rep they do with such inane advice? If you look at some of the posts of the people that have stumbled in here and dropped a random comment and wandered out, it's ridiculous.

    :mad2:

<again, steps back down off of Toughbook, dusts it off, and uses it to make Macintosh Applesauce>

Oh BTW Terminus - if it is a 28, I have some cf-28's with 13.3 TS -they don't have keyboards so I'm going to part them on Ebay soon if I can get my butt in gear. PM me if you have an interest.

I'm a long time Mac user too, so it's not that. (My Mac Pro is badass, by the way). I think that they are digging for rep, so they hope to post a valid answer, but us Toughbook users are in a different boat. Parts aren't as widespread for us, and alot of our stuff is custom. We also know 80% of the answers off the bat :D

I had a cracked one on a 600 - instead of replacing I just removed the touch panel - added a thin piece of lexan with a screen protector to knock down the glare and have a very clean bright screen - not a touch screen but still a viable and very clear screen. Not much help if you really want a touch but just giving you options - it is actually a pretty bright screen behind that foggy touch panel. And helps a lot with daylight use in the truck. I do miss the touch but I am digging the brighter screen. - Good luck -

That is certainly an option. I was hoping to have my cake (13.3" AND touchscreen) and eat it too. I did find a replacement at a reasonable price so it's on the way soon. I never even noticed it until it came time to calibrate. I was zip zooming along loading drivers and about to activate the operating system with M$... blah. I am sure the previous user (LEO?) had alot of stress and took it out on the touchscreen.
