Wait until you guys see what I'm doing... It should be ready in the next few days.... I can only spray 1 coat per day...

I'm taking my time with a 4 color pixelated desert camo scheme.... It looks VERY promising. I ordered some mask a while back... 4' X 100'... I need to do something with it!
-
Hell yeah! I'd like to see it too!
You doing the inner bezels too, or just the outer? -
I'm painting the Lid, inner bezel, hinge and latch... Gotta do the whole thing for it to look right!
-
I must say, I'm not a big fan of custom paint jobs. But THAT sounds SWEET!
-
Well any pics yet?
I thought about a camo job on my 28.
Are you using Duro Coat?

Didn't do the handle... I finished it. I'll post picks tomorrow. I'm not happy with it which is why I haven't posted picks and crowed about it. I'm MUCH better with the airbrush and think I'll do a regular Woodland Camo job next time. Freehand...

Hey TB Sir...
Even a "lame" paint job is still worth seeing and I think alot of us want to see what desert camo looks like on a toughbook. I am sure it's not as bad as you think. When SHTF I'll be using cans of spray paint on it -

Start with the end color then layers. I did one woodland and while it turned out nice, I really did not like it.
I did a few items i use for hunting in whats been termed as "Pine Straw" pattern.
Base of Kaki, then grabbed a corn broom (No Pine Needles around here) and took it apart and laid the straws out then sprayed the brown, moved straws and more brown, then very light spots of green.
Here is a link to some camo jobs done on rifles to give an idea and some patterns....

I did the exact opposite. I started light and went dark... Hence why I am unpleased. Sorry... I was out all day today... I'll post a pic tomorrow. It's pretty sorry looking.
-
I would have done the same TB. Don't beat yourself up, you can still build em better than most of us!!
-
Nice work...and thanks for the link! -
-
For lighter end result... Start with dark and go lighter.
There are stencils you can buy but I like to make my own.

Well.... Here it is. I just listed it. What do you think?
I think it's a little too dark. I think I'll freehand airbrush it next time. -
I'm reminded of that scene from My Cousin Vinny where the squeaky bronx girl says "Oh, you BLEND..."

Something I learned from my autobody classes that I took in college (community college edjumankashun!) that applies here.
Spray that puppy with clear coat. Give it a nice thick layer, then wetsand it a bit to even out those edges.
Then spray it again with clear (flat clear if you prefer). You'll have a smoother look to it. -
What type of paint do you use? I never bothered doing my own coloring because I could never find a tough paint, so I sent mine out to be coated with a Hard coat which I must say DOESNT ever come off. lol Reminds me of the Military coats on the electronics its so tough.
I use my laptop alot in the field so it gets nocked on things hence why I use the Gun Coat on it which has to be baked on. -
I dunno, looks you did a nice job painting it, but it looks more modern art than camo...
also, your paint is not nearly flat enough for effective camoflaging...
Also, you gotta paint the black plastic trim too. The point of camo isn't complete invisibility, just a mere break up of the outline. Something this machine I'm afraid doesn't do.
I'm recently got my hands on some krylon fusion camo paint. I haven't painted my toughbook, but I have painted some equipment cases. This stuff is flat sand color, and does a very nice job with plastics..
It goes for around $4 a can at walmart
edit: update on the krylon fusion, it looks great (flat as flat gets too), easy to put on, but its NOT that tough, good thing I sprayed an equipment case and not my laptop. -
On the whole, I must say it looks great. I know you were not happy with it but the buyer will be. Will it be effective in an environment in which camo is needed? Ya!...It sure as hell will be when compared to the factory bling bling sparkle silver.

DuraCoat or GunCoat would be good for these laptops, thats what the people use that did mine. Also there is a Cerekote which is Ceramic. Basically unless your just using they laptop for fun any Serious Rugged use would require some serious Paint.
-
Ceramic? Wow! Im interested! Any ideas how it reacts to magnesium as opposed to carbon steel?
-
No reaction, The stuff is Hard as Nails, Duracoat and Guncoat are GREAT paints, I have seen things nocked around in bad areas and the stuff didnt scratch. Makes me wonder why CF just doesnt use that or cerekote than the Crap they added with the clearcoat. The only thing I can think of is Legal issues and costs as well are the paint they use may have properties of heat reflection the others done have. After all I dont recall silver for those paints. lol

I ordered the mask from a local sign supply shop. I used to hand letter signs years ago... That and neon, plexiglas signs, etc. The mask was fairly expensive as I recall... Around $180 USD for the roll. I'm sure they have something similar in Italy!
-
ok regards i look for this in italy.....bud U.S.A is very the best....
