I have a CF-28 that I have recently acquired that I'm in the process of getting working. I have installed 256 of ram, working on getting wireless, etc. I changed out the cd rom for a dvd and it reads cd's fine and I have installed a few programs with it and it reads movie dvd's. I got a driver dvd off of evilbay that it wont read but it will read fine in my other laptop. I've read up on the hack to make dvd roms work in the cf-28 but since mines working for most cd/dvd's do I need to do that or is there another problem. I'm a newbie at these toughbooks so I ask dumb questions on occasion. Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Not all DVD drives can read DVD+/-R formats. Factory burned DVD-ROMs are different than the home-made kind.

    mk3017gap comes up as a 30gb hdd????
but yes, not all drives can read burnt dvd's. It used to be that +r would not read -r and vise versa. depending on the age of the donor laptop, this might be the issue/consideration.

The hack is to make the drive visible to the BIOS so one can boot an OS install disk; it has never been needed just for use within Windows. It will assign its own logical drive assignment and use it with no problem as long as it hasn't been hardwired to conflict with another drive on the IDE bus.

Secondary IDE Master? Primary IDE Slave? Man, that's getting a bit prrsonal...

[right click] my computer> manage>device manager>dvd/optical/cdrom> "your dvd model here"

check it, google it, and that should tell you what you need to know....

Maybe try to copy the DVD to another disk using your other computer. Some DVD drives just don't like certain brands of DVD. I had one that would not read Memorex brand disks.
