I have the CF 18 Toughbook touchscreen not the digitizer
The problem is it has a burn mark on the screen. The burn mark doesn't effect the LCD and I can see that the LCD is fine. It looks like the LCD is actually behind some type of plastic, Is this the screen cover or protector?
I have seen a replacement part labeled: 10-4IN-PROTECTIVE-FILM-FOR-CF18BH-TCH-CF-VPF07U which looks like a cover piece in a plastic housing, not just a thin sheet of film. Is this the part that is replaceable?
I hate to have to buy a new LCD screen, they don't seem to be as easy to find online as the other models. It is a 10.4 screen.
If anyone knows of a site selling used CF18 lcd's I would appreciate it.
Thanks

the cf-28 has the same sort of thing which looks like a screen protector, i have been meaning to check to see if it but havent had time....
best thing about the lcd if you really need to buy one is too keep a eye out on ebay, i have seen afew go very quick.........
there is a tread some where on the forum which tells you where to get the best buys for ur toughbook...... -
If it IS a screen cover you'll be able to see it in the corners. You can then try to peel it up and see if it comes off. I have one on the first CF-28 I bought. The 2nd one doesn't have one so I just bought on on ebay. If it is burned it's just as simple as pulling it off and buying a new one. $25 or so. If it is you screen... You may be able to cover it up to some degree with a cover.
Most screen covers have a slightly sticky back on them that are reactivated with water. You can take them off and rinse them off and reinstall them. Spritz a little water on them and then squeegee out the water toward the edges to work out all the bubbles. -
i just looked at the secound toughbook i bought and it also has a screen protector, thought i'll give it a clean never notice it before but in the corner you can see the edge of the screen protector are these hard to take off?????
only reason i'd want to take it off is caus the screen has 2 little marks onit which now i belive are on the actual screen protector.... -
Hello.
The CF-18 is supposed to have a circularly polarizing filter on it could this be mistaken for a screen protector? I'm not sure if its removable. Let us know how you go.
I am getting a CF-18 bought on E-bay very soon (I hope) and having seen a new CF-19 running in a shop I did notice the polarizer makes the screen uneven, similar to the early LCD screens which had viewing angle problems and might want to remove it.

DJ... Just take it off and rinse it with water! Then clean your screen with a lint free towel and reinstall... It's easy!
I don't know anything about the CF-18, CF-19... Though they look pretty cool. -
TB,
A bit off topic I know, but why are there so few Cf-18 users in this forum?Starting to worry about having bought one (should have it tomorrow, hope my expectations not overly inflated).

well my mate has one if that makes it sound any better??????
-
toughbook...........cheers for the tips on the screen protector!!!!!!!
-
Hehe, it Depends, does your mate use it as a door stop?
So it confirmed that the polarizer and the screen protector are the same item?

I sent out for the Spec book and manual on cd for the CF18
Hopefully it will tell me if the lcd cover is also the polarizer and if it can be replaced -
Just got my CF-18 the other day and my screen is sharper than the CF 19 I saw in the shop Perhaps it was the lighting. Having a lot of fun with it, its my first tablet device since my Palm Pilot
Going for a spin in Malaysia at the week end , should test out the GPS

Ed... I'll be anxious to hear how the GPS works on your model.
<sorry for being OT> -
well the GPS works very well on the cf-18 plus cf-19,
my mate had the cf-18 first with gps and he never had a problem with it, also as it is upgraded to a 12channel reciever, and the antenna belive it or not from what the guy from the computer shop said it is the same antenna as the one in the cf-28,
he then sold that one and bought the cf-19 it has the same 12 channel GPS reciever init and he so far hasnt had a problem and never did with the cf-18.... -
Re GPS:
Turned It on at the Malaysian Customs, never used it before, so I just put it on survey mode. seems there is no mapping software on it. here is the results.
I have not overlayed this on a map but it seems to reflect roughly the road showing the way up from the customs in Johor Bahru to Pasir Gudang Industrial estate, it seem the X and Y axis scales are not the same, the north leg of the journey looks exaggerated.
(Maybe we start a CF-18 GPS thread if you want to back-and-forth on settings and what not)

The non-digitizer CF-18 model model has the touchscreen in front of the LCD. The touchscreen then has a protective film over it.
You will need to determine if it is only the protective film that is damaged or if the burn mark effects the touchscreen in any way.
If it is just the film, you are in luck for a cheap fix. you just have to peel off the old film and install the new one. Before you install a new protection film, I would go ahead and clean the touchscreen especially around the small areas where the protective film didn't cover (above, below and both sides). Make sure it is absolutely spotless with no streaks. Then use compressed air to keep the dust particles off the touchscreen before you install the protective film. Dust particles can cause bubbles between the TS and Film which can effect how the display looks.
Peel off the plastic cover from the protective film and immediately line up the film with the top part of the touchscreen (look at how the protective film currently sits so you know about how much space to leave at the top). Ideally, you want it centered. Let the film form to the screen and the use a plastic spatula to get out all the air bubbles. Look in the paint supplies section of your local hardware store for a small plastic putty knife (only need about 1 inch long). Use it to work all the air bubbles out from in between the TS and Protective film. The way I have found that works best is to push a larger sized bubble around the screen collecting all the smaller ones that you can see - after that just push it out one of the sides. You might also want to go around the edges of the film making sure there isn't any air left as this can cause trouble later on.
If you notice that the screen underneath the protective film is also damaged, you are looking at a more costly repair. You can get either a Touchscreen Kit or buy the whole front panel assembly which contains the front panel, touchscreen, and protective film already installed. If you have to replace the touchscreen, let me know and I can walk you through it.
On non-digitizer models the part under the protective film *is* the touchscreen. The digitizer models have a digitizer sheet behind the LCD and do not have the touchscreen instead they just have a plain ole cover under the protective film.
If all you are replacing is the protective film, you don't even have to get inside the front panel. Replacing the touchscreen is another story.
Give me the model number and I can make sure you know which is the right part. Model number should be on the back of the toughbook and start with CF-18xxxxxxx where x represents different features. You can also get the model number from the setup information. When you turn the notebook on, Press F2 to enter setup and the model number should be on the first page.
Hope this helps. -
TB... Thanks for your input! You OBVIOUSLY know what you are talking about!
