Well... It happened. I must not have been paying attention and I thought I had my CF-31 locked down. I must have given approval for a Win10 upgrade and it overwrote everything on my laptop. My valid and legal MS Office 2013 was turned off as was most of my other programs including Kaspersky.

I am going to reinstall Win7 and run the upgrade to 10 again this weekend. What do I need to do to make sure this never happens again. After I get it up and running... I don't want to hear d1ck from MS again!

    Thoughts?

Use "Windows O&O Shut up" to turn off Windows update and a few other unwanted tools that Windows use to get in your business.

Rick the best advice I can give you is send @Mr. Fox a PM. He is not a mod no more but he might still give you a hand. Also @Phoenix has a lot of great threads on W10 which we all follow including me. He is the man when it comes to W10. He does not take PM's only because he was getting hundreds a day. Also we all use O&O shutup for W10

    1) You don't need to upgrade from 7 to 10 anymore, so save yourself the hassle. Since you've upgraded to 10 just recently, then your machine was activated using a hardware identifier and so, the moment you go online, it would be activated.

    2) After you've installed the latest build of Windows, I don't know why you would wanna turn off automatic updates. Dude this OS is so buggy you seriously do NEED those updates as they continue to fix this mess.

On the other side, if you wanna disable Windows Update, simply go to Services.msc (from the run dialogue box), then disable the Windows Update Service AND also disable Windows updates as well using O&O ShutUp10

Yes.. I know that I can use other OS's... But not easily with where I go and what I do and the VPNs I associate with. I don't have time to learn a new system.

Phoenix... Thanks... That is what I was looking for!

I find it easier to just use my recovery DVDs and then hit the upgrade button. It takes a little while longer but I don't need to futz around with all the drivers then. I had my last install of Win10 playing nice with everything. When it "upgraded" this time... It blew everything out. (And I am all legal and legit!) I just as soon load it the way I know it.

    Thanks for your help!

Anytime man. I find that clean installs go better with 0 hiccups than an upgrade which may or not carry many obsolete registry entries from the previous OS. Additionally, it'd be better to grab the latest drivers by researching all the ones you currently have and attaining the latest versions of them.

I understand this could be a hassle and probably not worth it on an old computer. Either way, if you need help, we're all here to help.

    Good luck

I had the wiseguy on the Microsoft forum claim he had never seen anything like that happen in all of the blah, blah.

I told him that I and the other several dozen people pitching a ***** about it on the forum had. Jackass. Hope you get it sorted out Rick.

Yea, me too. That's why I had 12 Tb of storage before I left the country. I made several grand just doing backup's for business.

How about Microsoft make an OS that's not such a pile of garbage that it wipes your files, and quite often the OS itself out on updates.

My pair of 3e's are the only thing I will ever have running that crap because I have no real choice.

    Hi all,

I have been running Win10 for quite some time on my old 19 Mk Iv. I have Paragon drive copied through several versions of Windows, always saving copies to my home server.

My Win 10 has run on my original Mk Iv I bought way back in 2010. I have upgraded through several spinners, and landed on SSD's.

Win 10 runs perfectly on the original Mk Iv, and I just built a newer hour Mk Iv. I have both Win 10 and 8.1 HDD's. They both work fine.

I have never been asked by MS to download win 10 on my win 8 drive. I originally signed up for win 10 as an insider and moved through all of the upgrades offering feedback.

When the initial release happened, there was a specific time frame to get win 10 for free as an upgrade. I have gone to the "store" on win 8, and it wants to charge me $199 for win 10 pro. I already have this, so I am not paying for another license.

As thus, since MS discontinued the win 10 free offering, I have received NOTHING concerning an upgrade.

    Hope this info helps....

    JD

If you tried Win 10, then changed your mind, it will usually let you go back to Win 10 even though the "free" period is over.

You may still be able to get Win 10 Pro for free if you are comfortable with doing a clean install. You may have to use your Win 8 Pro (or Win 7 Pro) install key as the install key for Win 10.

First try not giving it an install key at all. If it does not activate, then use the Win 8 (or 7) Pro key.

As always, back everything up in case you are not happy with results.

Yes, but, you would have to make sure you did not "wipe" your HD to install 7 or 8. The free upgrade time is over, I don't think using your W7/8 key will work on a clean boot?

Actually, you can wipe the hard drive and do a clean install this way, but it does depend on you having already installed Win 10 previously. If you previously installed on that computer, then MS has a digital license stored for that computer.

BUT THIS DOES DEPEND ON THAT PREVIOUS INSTALL!!

If you are uncertain that you previously installed Win 10, try using an old small capacity junk drive to do clean install.

And you can alternatively do the same with TrueOS, real BSD goodness. Or other *Nixes, many run well on Toughbooks ranging from business rugged to full rugged, Buntu derivatives can play nice with touchscreens even with some configuration.

I'm running Peppermint on a pair of Motion computing tablets, a core i3 and a dirt slow core solo I got NIB cheap.

The core solo will barely run XP but it runs the hell out of Peppermint. I have 4 toughbooks and 3-4 laptops that will arrive here in the next few weeks. (Philippines)

    Most will get Linux.
