Just out of curiosity, does anyone still use:
- M34's?
[*]CF-50's?
[*]CF-T5's?
[*]CF-T7's?
[*]CF-Y7's?
-
-
Yes I still have a market for Cf 50's. They are nice laptops for budget minded customers.
-
i'm getting a m34 and a cf-27 in a few days. my standard machine is a MK2 CF-28.
older toughbooks are far more versatile than people assume. Hell, my CF-28 boots faster than the ASUS in my sig. -
The chief problem with the older rugged models is screen brightness. There are lots of uses for CF-27s and M34s, navigation, OBD, and the like, but the displays tend to be hard to see compared to the CF-29s and CF-18s which can be had for really short money to a careful shopper. The batteries for these older models are essentially not available.

Not me! Only 29's, 30's, 31's and 19's here! Ohh yea and 52's are invited too

I use a CF-27 since 6 months or so, and i was lucky to get it with a working battery (that works for 2 hours....). Nice and handy laptop, that i take with me everywhere i go.
Only thing that the CF-27 lacks, would be a nice simple 3D card. -
-
Well I'm a reseller. I only have a CF-19 (my fiance's), my CF-31 and a 29 in my truck with a PDRC
So that's only 3 toughbooks -
Seriously though, I head over heels in love with my CF-28. I'm never, ever giving it up. I cant believe it took me a year to get it working. And i'm already plotting to get two more toughbooks. Good Lord, people, you've all made me insane!
Does anyone have the number for Toughbookers Anonymous? -

Oh, i have a Cf-27 MK2, a CF-28 Mk1 (600Mhz P3) and a CF-71 (Celeron 450Mhz).

Looks nice, mate. Although i must say that you really should paint that. The "leg" looks like its plumbing pipes...
A friend of mine had one of those. A blood red Hemi with offroad suspension and tires. Dual tires in the back... Bigass sticker on the back. "If you cant Dodge it, RAM it!" -
lol, my whole entire owns RAM trucks... At my parents house my dad, and both brothers have rams, when I used to live there too the neighbors would comment on how we had 4 big RAM trucks!
I just put 33"x12.5"R17 ProComp Mud terrains on mine too!. Also got a 3" lift in the front and just recently replaced the front bumper with a chrome one because I jacked up the stock bumper not knowing what I was doing off roading at the sand dunes. Live and learn
-
I only drive it during the summers, and even then its more like a rolling project than an actual car. I only have it because its fun to work on. And basically every relative had one at one point. Its sort of a sentimental thing.
It can reach a whopping 90kph on a good day. (Thats with the old 2 stroke engine. haven't had time put the new 4 stroke 1.1l engine into it.)
On a sidenote, since i need a car here in sweden as well, i'm getting an 1990 Audi V8 3.6 in a few weeks. just gotta wait until the current owner gets back from germany. -
Ram tough till the front suspension falls off again. I helped fix one with baling war (wire). It seemed stronger than stock that-a-way.
'course if you stick to the pavement it should last a while.
As far as Toughbooks my favorite using mocheen is the CF-51 described below. (in the house)
My beater unit is a Mk3 CF-29 in the F250.
I just got a CF-29C that may ride in the jeep. I'm putting a OEM gps sled in it. -

So I guess the answer to my question would be that people still use these "oldies".
-
Yes ,it is cool to be able to use 10 and 12 year old laptops that everyone thinks are new.

I'm interested in a specific model of Y7.

All 4 of my kids have there own cf-28, i personally use cf-28 (stay in the truck), cf-29 and cf-t5 I carry back and forth to work in Dubai. Also got 4, cf-07's done up with windows xp and one is to be permanently mounted in my halo warthog replica when it gets to that point.

Yep, been working on it when I am home from work. It's been kinds of a slow go on it the last couple of months. Have plenty to do on it but had couple of other projects I needed to get done, plus swapping out the chassis I was going to use to another one. Wanted all my DMV paper work straight.

Let The Madness Begin, Or My Warthog Build.
That is my build thread. If I get it done. It will be the third replica done. First will be the one done by WETA. Second is the one that Peter Cooper has done for the HALO fan film Operation Chasity. Then mine.

That is Peter's build thread. His is based on a land rover 110.
On the Toughbook side of things he has a few cf-27's he has for props in the movies.
On my warthog I plan on having a cf-07 permanently mounted in the warthog for the overhead screen and having it where I can put my spare cf-28 in the console where the screen is showing but the rest is hidden. -
^ Mate, you're crazy. But the good kind of crazy. Thats one helluva project. I'll be following this. Maybe it'll give me the motivation i need to continue my humvee.

i gotta tell you though. if you need sturdy car, get a ford explorer. the damn thing was so beaten up that we had to weld the doors off. the back end was basically molded into a fastback. but it was still drivable. -
I have 4 cf25's (play around w/them) 2 cf27's, a cf28, and most recently a cf29 I got from Gork! Why all these? I don't really know, got my first cf27 3 years ago off of ebay, and got hooked on them! as for the cf25's I got one for $10.00 that was supposed to have no hard drive and no battery, but when I got it it had a hard drive with Win. 95, and it had a decent battery. I thought it was cool being so old, and got two more that were still in good working order. Right now I swapped the hard drive in my cf29 with a spare one, gonna see if Windows 7 will work on it, either 7 ultimate or the simple version, I forget what it is called, but I have copies of 2 different versions. It will be interesting to see if any of them will work!
-
I know that my MK2 CF-28 can run Windows 7 Home Premium quite well for a P3. Its rather slow, but still usable. So CF-29 will run it perfectly.
Its a bloody pain to get TB's or parts here in sweden. Most of the time i order from Ebay, but buying a notebook for instance basically kills any budget since the shipping is 50% of the price. And of course the two toughbooks i found here in sweden were sold before i got there. they other guy was simply faster... -

It's the H150 project. Only part of a real Humvee he used is the ft clip. The rest was all hand made. -

WOW, That is way too cool. He did a great job on that
-
Window 7 works great on my cf29! only problem I have is the hot keys for the volume control don't work. They show on screen, but no effect on volume. That home made hummer body is cool, looks like aluminium or stainless!
-
I dont get HOW people use these old machines. I mean the cf 29 was decent but when i got my 30 i was WOW esp since i put 4GB and an SSD in it.
But using P3 and older how is it done. Windows XP will barely move on those. I am not criticizing moreso asking. I would not mind having these older units, but wouldnt know or be able to deal with the speed. How DO YOU do it? -
I have two M34's using one as my car PC and of course old faithful my cf-18
-
I have a copy of windows 7 32 bit ultimate that I am tinkering with right now with VLITE. (the vista, windows 7 version of NLITE) got it down to 28 processes on start up and it will fit on a single blank cd. Haven't tried it on a P3 machine yet. -
-
So you guys HAVE THESE units. Would it make sense for me to buy an older model say 27 or 28 and do the stuff you all do with it, or just go with a 29? Ya its a weird thing to ask.
Also you should check out this Welcome to RT Se7en Lite - Slipstream Service Pack,Integrate Updates,Integrate Drivers,Integrate LP,Remove Components,Enable or Disable features,Unattended Setup,Apply Tweaks,Add Icons,Wallpapers,Themes,Bootable USB or DVD its meant for 7 where as vlite is meant for vista but it WORKS for 7. I plan to reduce a copy of 7 soon.
As far as sharing the image i THINK its fine since m$ has images out there. But you have to use your OWN key, and that key has to be for the version he is modifying. -

I ordered a CF-29 mk2 (cf-29ewpgzkm) for $275.00. If The pictures do it justice, it looks like new! I ordered an Optical drive caddy (cause it only comes with a floppy drive). It has 1.3 Ghz, 768 MB RAM, WIFI, touchscreen, backlit keyboard and I am hoping to use an SATA to IDE adapter to put an Mtron 32 GB SLC SSD in the HD caddy and load XP. Might see about bumping up the RAM to 1.5 GB too.
(All this assuming I have not been ripped off by one of those unscrupulous eBay sellers.) -
WELL, I still have some old TB. 28, 72, 34, 47,48.....
I still have a bunch of cf-28 TB, as my ebay fire sale met with mixed results, so if anyone wants some, let me know.
I have maybe 15 or 16 cf-28s, 600 & 800 mhz.
I used the last of my bought and donated HDrives in three mrk 3 cf-28s and put the rest into cf-29s. Found a supply of 20gig PATA drives for $15 a piece, and have been loading those in a collection of MPC transports X1000laptops, which I must say, are not a bad product, P4 2.4 with a cool fingerprint scanner.
I decided to sell off a bunch of the 28s, and stick with 29s, as most are the same model, and after getting a recovery/restore disk for the lot, I've been configuring them in record time, the only issue slowing me down is 29 hard drive caddies. I now have twenty plus ready for shipment and placement in the homes.
It's killing me that I had a bunch of the caddies and sold off 2/3 of them, only to us the profits to buy a large lot of computers that had mainly 29s without caddies.
Found that the ribbon connector in a CF-50 is similar to the CF-29, and with cf-50 caddies very cheap, was thinking about buying some of these to use the cables, and them picking up some aftermarket caddies, but they appear to be to short on first glance.

Are most of your sales local, website or through ebay? I notice there are a few resellers on this forum. I wouldnt assume local unless you live near a military base.

xbox, Most are Ebay, though my friends have been buying up the MPC Transports.
Blair, you are correct, again.
I tried the 50 ribbon last night and with a caddy, no joy.
But, I tried it without a caddy, on one of the parts cf-29 that had the bottom plate off, and it seemed to fit ok. So, Im going to mess with one of those cool drives converters I bought a while ago and then see about filling the void.

Depending on weather you want TS or not you can get the Core duo for around $700. The C2D are maybe $1300. So ya that is cheap. Considering some CF 29 go for $500+, i think its a great deal.

I received my new CF-29E yesterday, and I have to say it is very clean. It is as close to looking brand new as a used laptop can be. I did a clean install of XP, updated the BIOS to version V2.00L17, bought an optical drive caddy, and put the DVD burner in it. I still want to get an SSD, and bump the RAM up to 1.5 GB. I also saw a non-stick-outy 2 port PCMCIA USB card on eBay to get a couple more USB ports.
The only negatives I see, so far, is the keyboard is the rubber membrane type, and is a little stiff (I can get used to that), and the touchpad's vertical movement is very slight compared to it's horizontal movement. To move the cursor all the way down the page takes 7 or 8 full swipes. Mouse settings seem to have no affect on this. (Maybe a loose cable?) I don't really use the touchpad much anyway, as I prefer a mouse.
I love this machine!!!
Do people still want older model Toughbooks?
