The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Do you ever wonder what happens to the folks that come on the forum ask one or two questions and then disappear forever?

    1. There question/problem is the only thing that ever happens to their TB?

    2. They get disgusted and throw it out the window while on vacation in Canada?

    3. They drive over it with their Blue F-150 with the laptop open?

    4. They get lost in a black pit in the FAQ?

    5. Where did they go?

    Just wondered.

Granted we are a witty, sarcastic and cranky bunch but isn't there room for more of us.

    Stick around. :)

They aren't used to this type of help. They sell the Toughbook on Fleabay with wrong information and photos. Toughbooks all look alike anyway.
They then buy a Dull(to eventually be thrown against a wall by Rob :p ).
Then they get to speak to the familiar Indian or Pakistani tech support who has spoken English for 2 weeks now.
Extra warm fuzzy feelings for buying the extended warranty for 3/4 the cost of the laptop.
Next stop is to buy a Macbook.

Just so you know, though I only have 1 post so far I plan on sticking around. I still use my CF-72 although I am waiting for some free time to upgrade the processor to a 2.4 from 1.8, HDD to a 80GB, and replace the main MB so hopefully my fan will work with the new proc. Plan on fabbing up a vehicle mount at some point and possibly a few other mods but will keep yall updated with the mods. Also have a couple of PII and PIII CF-27's that I am going to fix up (one with backlit keyboard) so they dont end up in a dump somewhere. -Fred

I haven't even got my 1m ram yet. I'm just now figuring stuff out and don't want to sound to stupid. Maybe some get intimidated by the advanced stuff or the jar gin, I'm guessing the dulls is whats sitting in my basement with a burned out monitor and an external monitor cable ducked taped to it. I go at everything very slowly. 1st ram then Cd's and GPS. I have a few things I would discuss CD/DVD vs external battery, best external GPS and do they require an on board CD drive, but I don't want to derail this thread and that stuff will come in do time. As I'm new and haven't had this thing long I will hope that most find the answer they need and never ever have one other problem.

This can be an intimidating place at first. I know....been there....been scared.
    Glad you are here.
I think the thing that scared me the most was Toughbooks avatar. Brought back fond memories of 1968-9. MCRD San Diego. I asked him to change it as it scared me but so far I ve been ignored. Yeah...a Hollywood Marine. Now why doesn t the quote sign work on this keyboard.
    Hmmmmm........stand by for tinkering!

Again welcome and glad you are here.

Been here a while too, (4 years) since back when I had a 27. You have all helped me (unknowingly) bring life back to a 28 and am busily moding my 29mk1, not to mention repairing my better halfs 18 when it's been airborne ;)
Only have a few posts but tend to read the forum 2 or 3 times a week. I wouldn't say this place is intimidating at all but I don't get too involved because I am just too busy right now and I think it would be inpolite to chirp into general banter when I don'd know when I will next get a chance to reply/interupt etc :D
Thanks to one and all for your efforts

That's better. Observe the quote 'and ". Now why does a single key quit? Luckily I had a spare keyboard. I almost had to "shudder" use the rubber KB.

I don't think """"everbody''''' goes to ebray but I know of what you speak.

'Jeff' maybe he wore the quotation key out.

You just have to be patient. I was finding 2.6GHz P4-M for the price of a darn C2D swap on a cf51! Eventually I found my processor and pulled the trigger as fast as I could. I keep forgetting to list my 1.8 I took out of my 72 months ago and the spare parts 72.

Oh.... never thought of going that route, it would be easier!

The newbies are probably still "Head down & -up" in the FAQ's.... which generates the question.... what's the difference between the FAQ's & the "Twilight Zone"?.... some of us will come out of it alive, & better people for it.... but in the mean time....

"Cut me some slack, Jack".... "Quit jivin' me dude". :p

P.S. "I am serious, and don't call me "Shirley"!"

P.P.S. WHEN I complete my first mod, is there an awards ceremony?

Were getting to the "Crux" of the porblem...a "second".... there are sixty of them in a minute....and sixty "minutes" in an hour, if a newbie spends three hours searching the FAQ's looking for the answer to a simple problem... how many "nano-seconds" of their life has disappeared in the "Twilight Zone".

Now what about my question: The awards ceremony?

I am lurking on this forum for a long time ,and wondering what those people
do if not fiddling around on there toughbook ? do you have a life after toughbook ?

I found loads and loads of interesting treads over my Favorite toy "THE " toughbook ,have had HP'S nc4010 nc6000 nc8000 Drell's Hell's from Acers and a truck load of other junk that was not worth the money I pay'd for .
Then one day I sow the light and found a orphan CF-28 on the internet, from day one I have I have fun with it ,discover it's simple Design, on the other hand it endless bullet proof opportunities.

I have learned a lot ,and found loads of goody interesting things about my CF-28 without asking questions .
If you take your time to Search ,its all there !

Want to thank all you guys that are posting here for the benefit of all the Toughbook users . :notworthy:

This is my first post and lets hope not my last .

Happy Holidays to all of you .

Seriously in term of a netbook. I prefered my cf-m34 than those fancy netbook that are available on the market as of to date eventhogh they are latest in technology. They will not even last a year. I've got another two unit of m34 coming with 1ghz on it and preparing all the goodess I might instal on like internal web cam with mic, gps or maybe a bluetooth.

ST..still on transit and based on the detail decription on listing it has non working USB but I am confident that I can repair those. Originally the seller listed for only one and later on he made an offer outside ebay with the same condition of the other unit for much lower price(100buck). Here is the original listing. Panasonic Toughbook CF-M34 1GHZ Touchscreen + caddy &HD - eBay (item 320625732328 end time Dec-02-10 20:35:21 PST)

I will let you know when it was fixed and ready to ship.
