Doing some fiddlin' with my computers and phones trying out the new Windows 10 preview and so far so good.

I have an idea to see if the PF-72 will run it as it seems to be less of a hardware hog than Vista for sure. I cannot get it to boot from the install disk, I get a message "operating system not found" I know it will boot from the DVD drive as I can boot a Gparted-live disk just fine.

I have been looking around for an answer and coming up pretty dry. I did find one that may be describing my dilemma at Windows Seven Forums that is talking about UEFI BIOS and Legacy BIOS.

I am wondering if any of you smart guys here know if this is my problem? I am not well versed in BIOS as I haven't had to muck with it much. Any advice here?

I have a couple of CF-71 and 72's. XP or Linux would be the way to go on them,I'm going to bet that anything over XP is going to be slow as death on it. I can try to boot Windows 10 on a 72 tonight but I think it's going to make my head hurt.

What I have read is this OS is supposed to be lighter weight than Vista and Seven. I had vista on the 72 and yes, it was very slow at times. Let me know if you have success. I was reading that Windows PE may work but I'm still not grasping it.

The problem I am having is the CD drive will not read the disc on my 72 or my CF-51,so I am on the 51 pent M booting from a external DVD.

Sorta, got to get a 32 bit copy first.

So, while it "may" run on a CF72 If you need a better OS. I suggest trying the Linux distro called Zorin. It's smaller faster and FREE. Looks like Windows also.

    http://zorin-os.com/free.html

What are the minimum system requirements that I need to install Zorin OS?
For the Zorin Desktop based versions (not Lite):
    1 GHz x86 processor
5 GB of Hard Drive space
512 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution

For the LXDE based versions (Lite):
    266 MHz x86 processor
    2GB of Hard Drive space
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution

Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 8.1:
    • Processor: 1 GHz or faster.
    • RAM: 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
    • Free hard disk space: 16 GB.
    • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver.
    • A Microsoft account and Internet access.
    CF72 Specs
    CPU• Mobile Intel® Pentium ®4 Processor 1.60GHZ-M featuring Enhanced Intel Speedstep® technology

I will give it a whirl tomorrow with the CF-51,then with a CF -50 and a 48 if I have time. I'll just switch hard drives around.

Thanks all the replies, I appreciate it. Thanks Shawn for the tip on Zorin I have used Ubuntu but I may put that on my 72 with the 1.8 ghz processor and see how it looks. I am not a fan of the layout of Ubuntu's GUI.

Zorin with the windows look enabled is very intuitive for windows users.
I used the Zorin "core" version on a CF52. It has all the basic needed software out of the box. Browser, office suite , etc...
I would have no fear of loaning a Zorin setup laptop to any windows user without instruction..

I tried Mac OS X (hackintosh)on that CF52 also. I actually liked the simple ease of the OS X, but I can't get wifi to work.

Windows 10 refuses to boot on a CF-51 Mk2,even from my external DVD. So there we sit.

    Shawn,
I will try the Zorin-Core, I'm always up to trying a new OS LOL!

I had to reinstall vista on the '72, then windoz 7 (because it is an upgrade disk) then open Windoz 10 and then sources, then set up, it fails too. If you run the setup from the auto-start it says the cpu is the problem. I could not launch W 10 from vista, not supported, has to be 7 or 8. Oh well I tried.

I have Windoz 10 up and running on my CF-74 and for a Beta it is very good, my interest is to have a phone and pc that are similar. (I have windoz 10 on a phone too) I really was interested in Ubuntu Phone because it basically is a PC that was supposed to be dockable, I like that idea. Too bad they can't get it going. I'm a GM service tech and we have to use windows so it just is easier for me to stay with Windows.

This forum is hard to type on, the page keeps refreshing and you have to wait for it. Bad.

    Thanks

Ever since the "upgrade" to the new forum software, this board has had "issues"
I can't decide between egg on face or epic fail......Maybe egg on face due to epic fail.....
