    Hi

I know this isn't really in the spirit of the forum but I've looked all over the internet and I can't find what I'm looking for.

    My question is:

Does a CF-48 have a CPU fan? If so how quiet is it?

I'm looking to buy a quiet laptop and heard that most toughbooks are passively cooled. I'm quite taken with the idea of getting one of these and there are some cheap CF-48s on ebay but I can't find the specs anywhere.

    Thanks if anyone can help.

Welcome to the Forum. This group is about all Toughbooks and the only stupid question around here is the one not asked. I know nothing about CF-48's, but someone around here probably does. There seem to be a couple of Panasonic techs who post here from time to time who will probably chime in sooner rather than later. Good luck!

I had a CF-50 for a week, and it wasn't very quiet either. I don't know if the CF-7X series is better or not though (73/74). They are the semi rugged models, while the 40's/50's are business rugged.

My 28 is dead silent though. If the sun is bright enough, I can't tell if it is on when it's waking up from sleep.

    Thanks for the quick response!

Think I'll start looking out for a CF-28 instead. :)

I couldn't hardly see my screen at ALL in bright light on my CF-28 800mhz 256mb unit. It was also DREADFULLY slow running W2K..Even after I upgraded the memory and hard drive, it was still slow BUT it was quiet and quite a conversation getter.

Have bought a CF-48 PIII M 1.13 GHZ with 512 and wondering, noisy fan or not, if I should've waited and bought a P4 version of the same box. From what I've read, it's a semi-rugged and technically, is basically just as tough as the CF-28 for a whole lot less (just not sealed like the 27/28/29's).

If you have a touch screen, it is much dimmer. The 48 isn't as tough though, assuming it shares the same characteristics of the 50 (Later model in that series). I've thrown my 28 like a frisbee (not recommended), while I wouldn't attempt to do the same to a 50.

Is the 48 tougher than a Dell? Sure, but it does not have the ultra tough magnesium case.

Hi I just recently got my hands on a cf-48 piii 900mhz 128mb 30g, it is running a little slow when i put a firewall on it and the anti virus. I figured I would add more ram, but i did not get any books with it and can not find manuel online, so I do not know what type of ram to get. alsao i was wondering how many slots are on it.

    I sorted a couple manuals this morning that some people sent in to me;

    http://www.modly.org/servicemanuals/CF-48/

That might help you a bit. You should have 144-pin So-Dimms in that puppy (use PC133 to be safe, though PC100 should probably work). I'm not sure how many free slots it has though. I'm heading off to work in a minute though, so check through those manuals to see how many slots you have.

does anyone know where i can get a good price on the ram? i am still not sure if i will be able to put a 512 chip in it, but i will be willing to buy a 512 or 256 if i can not get the 512 to work. If anyone has one to sell and wants a 128 chip i will be happy to buy and send old to you.

hi, the p4 48's have 2 fans and are loud, but fast. the centrino 48's have 2 fans, also loud, but slow. the p3 48's have 1 fan making them less loud, but slower at p3. the p4 72 has 1 fan and mag case, but when fan turns on it is loud(large fan) fast machine though. the 30 centrino duo has no fans making it dead quiet and quite fast-fastest laptop i've ever owned or used! and 1000 nit touchscreen for kicks!(sunshine readable)hope this helps

Don't you have that backwards? Or is your personal life more rugged than your work?

Works for Panasonic and they give me for my home office a CF-W2 a few years ago. The CF-30 and the CF-Y5 was bought when Panasonic close their main office here and send us to work from home office. Cf-30 for $500.00 with 11 hours of use in box and CF-Y5 for $250.00.
Thanks and sorry for my English
