I've got ubuntu 8.10 almost fully working on my cf-18 touchscreen; The only current issues are the hotkey+ (front panel) buttons, and automatic screen rotation (manual/command line rotation works fine). I'm going to try to do a write-up this evening.

It's not a bad install, really. Everything works out of the box except for the hotkeys, touchscreen, and a minor WIFI issue (selecting disable wifi doesn't actually turn the wifi card RF off!).

Well I spent 3 days futzing with the wifi and finally got it started so it will work when rebooted. And even then I had to show my SSID on my router as it will not find and keep connected to a hidden SSID for some reason. I am using WICD as the wifi utility.

I am a long way to getting to anything about the touchscreen. I really just wanted to try this out. It kind of reminds me of the cheap way out... Nothing really works 100%... Yeah it's free... But so is venereal disease! So what! 50% of all links trying to explain anything on the Internet are dead links and 99.99% of everyone talks like you already know how to use the program. I must say that I used the Sidux-IRC for some help and the people there were VERY helpful and patient. They were the one's who helped the most with the wifi.

Like I said... I just wanted to play around with it. When the Recovery Disks get here with the next CF-18 I bought... I may just redo the whole shebang... I don't know yet. Right now I am trying to make it so XP boots as the default if no keys are touched and change it to a 10 second wait instead of 5 secs for a decision on the boot order. There are 25 different ways to do it depending on which flavor you like to lick.... So many distros, dialects, flavors... blah, blah, bah....

    <Rick's new CF-18 is a dual boot Frustration/XP mix!>

    What’s wrong with you

You just get that darn cf-18 running good under windows, and now you want to foul it up again

I have a version of Austumi, that ran from cd that I used to run in the cf-29
It recognized the wi-fi card and I was on the internet quickly

Well... The weird thing is trying to learn the lingo. I mean they have like 14 different command lines all used for different stuff. Then they will say, "Just edit the file..."

    Yeah? Where? Which one?

You're right... I may leave it on but IF I do... I want it to boot straight into windows. I'm only going to spend a few more hours trying to figure it out... I'm back out at the In-Laws starting tomorrow until Wednesday night. I'm bringing it with me but the in-laws don't have wifi... Just wired DSL. ( I thought about bringing my travel router but I'm usually too tired when I'm finished to surf anyway.)

So...If I can get it to boot into XP... I'll keep it... For a little while...

I still haven't gotten the track point scrolling to work with my X61/T43 with Ubuntu. I can run the code but it doesn't work when I restart. I have to figure out how to get it to run everytime I restart. It works perfect with opensuse 11+ but the sound doesn't work on any of my rigs with that distro. I usually just go back to windows. Mint is sweet and has all the media software already configured out of the box. Once I figure out how to master linux on other laptops then I will try toughbooks. It might be a while.

I guess I wanted to learn enough just in case... You know... In case the asteroid hits and the only thing left that will work is the Toughbook that has Linux loaded on it.

with your WIFI issues the rc.local file will help loading a command everytime you boot.
The newest Ubuntu version 8.10 works very well. Remember that all PC and Laptops need tweaking with Linux so Toughbooks are no exception. I like the fact I'm getting back into the Software Nuts and Bolts so to speak and with that am migrating Customers from Windows to Linux.

An entry I made in the Ubuntu Forums may help.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-789774.html

manpage of iwconfig as a source of commands to place in the rc.local file.
    http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man8/iwconfig.8.html

    Big NOTE!

Every new kernel update will most likely require a reload and tweaking of the WACOM driver.

My default boot is to Ubuntu and rarely use Windows. You can change the default selection in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

    http://boff.wordpress.com/2007/01/17/editing-bootgrubmenulst-to-change-the-grub-boot-menu/

I'm using this on a CF-19. I have some of the FN functionality working (Audio) and the front panel Display Brightness controls. The Screen Rotation App works good too.

    Overall I'm Happy.

BIG NOTE! If using Ubuntu stay with v8.10(Intrepid) and do not move to v9.04 (Jaunty). They have issues with the HAL not seeing the WACOM devices correctly. 8.10 works just fine.

I have tried several Linux live CD's. Some will connect to wifi fine, others seemingly won't work as live CD, but when actually installed will connect fine. Go figure?!?! One example that springs to mind for me is Ubuntu 7.1
    YMMV

Hello all, I have been playing with different linux distros on various cf-27s, a cf-28 600 and a cf-28 1 gig. The only one that i tried that works on all models to include wireless is tinyme. It is small, easy to use and just works. It also comes as a livecd. The link is to the droplet version which is only 150 meg.

They have it mirrored on Sourceforge.net; alternatively, if you Google TinyMe-2008.1-Droplet.i586.iso you'll find links to several mirror listing sites as well as Torrent seeds.

    Good hunting!

Big thanks to all the guys, whos find out, how to use Linux on the Toughbook. I use UBUNTU 8.10 now, with all the updates.
Now I can fully use my Sony-Erricson F3507g HSDPA/GPS Card inside of my Laptop with the help of this: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ericsson_F3507g_Mobile_Broadband_Module .
U have to blacklist option in /etc/modprobe.d .
Two things are not working, the Digitizer and the integrated 56K modem. If I write dmesg | grep wacom I got usbcore: registered new interface driver wacom and wacom: v.1.49:USB Wacom Graphire and Wacom Intuos tablet driver . I used this write up: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=956536

I have been running various versions of Puppy Linux (50megs) on two CF-28's (one 1g one 800) and previously on a CF-27.

If you are having trouble with another Linux distro or need something small try Puppy.

The folks on the Puppy Forum are real friendly and helpful as well.

Toughbook - I feel your pain re. the tendency of folks in the Linux world to forget steps because they assume that everyone is a Linux-geek. I have chastised people many times for that. I have also tried to post FAQ's and edit Wikis and clarify Forum Threads as I can to assist others - and to be sure that I really understood!
