That's another reason I like the 9mm. Ammo is far cheaper, and can be stocked in greater quantities on a lower budget.

Basically if Dawn of the Dead ever happens in real life, I'll be killing 1000 zombies, not 300. :D

Not to get too far off of the topic but if I was adding to my arsenal I would add a .22 cal rifle. A Ruger 10-22 is fairly cheap. Hi-cap mags are now plentiful in the free world and ammo is still fairly cheap. A .22 long rifle cartridge is very versatile....

When we lived in Barrow I knew an older Inupiat Eskimo hunter that only used a .22 Hornet. He used it for everything. From caribou to seals to polar bears.
I asked him why he didn't use something with a little more power. His reply was that a bigger bullet just spoils more meat.

Another buddy who knew him better said he was the best hunter on the North Slope. Also said he didn't like to waste bullets either. If he couldn't take the target with one shot then he didn't shoot.

I learned a lot from that man. I still haven't figured out what I am going to do with 10K of 22 ammo though.....

Well... With everything I have... My sisters used to joke that they foresaw me moving to Montana and buying a "Compound"... But the truth is... If it ever hits the fan... They will be at my doorstep... As it should be.

After Katrina I also stocked up on quite a few cases of MREs. I figure I/we could live for quite a few months fairly comfortably... And I don't think anyone would ever come into the house. ;)

I'm at my daughters house in Ketchikan right now. Many miles south of Barrow but still in Alaska. She and her hubby have been up at the hospital now for 16 hours now trying to bring there first kiddling into the world. The nice thing about Ketchikan is there are only 2 ways to get here. Air or water.
No roads from the mainland as this place is on an island. We lived here for 7 years and are seriously thinking of moving back.

Abundant water, woods, wildlife and sealife. The only draw back is the over abundance of rain. 160+ inches per year is the average. I've been here 8 days now and yesterday was the first time the rain stopped and the sun shown through in spots....

I've always wanted to visit Alaska. My wife and I thought about taking a cruise up there. It certainly is beautiful scenery at least from the pictures I've seen... And I'm dying to see the Northern Lights!

The problem is... I like the tropics! If I move any place it will be south! I just hate being cold... Though I'm sure you'd get used to it. Maybe because I was born in Hawaii?

I think that could be it man... Born in warm weather, and you don't want to get cold ;)

I've been to Alaska 3 times, and I'm always willing to go back another time. I drove up there one of those times, and my reasons were stupid, but I don't regret that trip at all. I saw the coolest scenery in my life going through northern Canada, and through Alaska. Saw the northern lights while going through Saskatchewan too which was very cool.

My uncle lived in Kodiak for many years too, and he loved it!

I was born in Okrahoma and figured out there had to be more to life than sweating all summer long. 100 degrees with 100% humidity. How do you escape that???? Alaska, my friend. Ketchikan is a temperate rain forest. Not hot, and not as cold as Barrow. Right now looking out the front window it's raining. Turn to the right and look out the back window and it's snowing like crazy. 40 feet can make a big difference...

When I was a kid my Dad worked for Naval Intelligence. (He could later tell me.) He used to go to Alaska to install spy systems on trawlers out there. He brought back a lot o beautiful pictures and was in AK just a few days before the big quake in 64. He went back up there and took pictures after the fact. I'll have to find those pics. I know my Mom has those around here somewhere. (At her house now... I'll go pick her up tomorrow.)

He used to tell some pretty cool stories form that era...

Okay... this is all very nice... but does ANYONE know why the Chinese Army is stockpiling .45 ACP? :twitcy:

More importantly, will they trade ammo for mail order brides?

Why are they stockpiling it? Maybe because many of us are carrying .45's.
It's not a fast as a 9mm but it hit's a lot harder. When we're here in southeast Alaska I usually carry a Glock 21. With ball ammo it's more than adequate for black bear defense. Up further north where you run into costal brown and interior grizzlies it would be a .44mag with 300 grain hard cast core ammo. A rifle or shotgun would be more efficent but it's also more likely to get set down somewhere and not be readily at hand when needed.

Of course you can look all this info up on George Bush's internets on your trusty Toughbook while researching anti-theft options. Just to keep it on topic.

New Alaskan was born at 5:38 p.m. AST, at 8 lbs 5 ounces. My daughter went through a 23 hour labor to get him out. She has always had a bit of a stubborn streak and liked to hold on to stuff a little too long....

So what you're saying is that when the Chinese finally take legal ownership of the USA (They own about 60% of the nation's debt incurred by this ill-conceived war), they're going to want to be able to shoot American guns, just like they want to be able to wear American blue jeans?

BTW - Congratulations on the new grand-monster. May he grow to be as strong as an Elk! (And hope you have plenty of opportunity to spoil him and send him home, too)

    SN,
Is this first grand baby? I'll bet that you are proud and relieved that the mother and baby are OK.

This is our first grandchild. My wife, the grandmother, gets her turn on Thursday. I leave that morning to go back to the lower 48 and she comes that afternoon.

My daughters a trooper though. She hung in even when the docs were discussing a C-section. She said lets give it another try. Sure enough he made it.

Since all the relatives live in the lower 48 I told her we should just set-up the web cam and stream it live. Even her husband thought that was a good idea.
I could tell by the LOOK that she didn't think that was really wanted to do. No further words were said on that subject.....
