Engenius wifi card arrived today; installed it, downloaded driver, and boom: night and day difference. I'm getting 24 mps everywhere in the house and even out in the yard. I got 5 mps on a good day with the old card.

Thanks Tomcat, Stiffnecked, graybeard, TB et al. for the advice. Thanks to graybeard especially: b/c of him I resisted the impulse to go with the screwdrivers I had instead of the ones I needed.

    D'OH!
He did say routers, not APs, didn't he?

ED: No, I believe he did mean APs; hmmm...

Kismet... Netstumbler... B0th have their strengths. I say try both, see what kind of data you collect...

You want Net Stumbler. You can also couple it with GPS and log the lat. & long. of every SSID... Then map it all out.

NetStumbler it is--terrific program. Looking for SSIDs (is it called "warding"?) could get as addicting as DX-ing with my fm tuners!

BTW: having gone into my 29, I realize one of the many reasons--obvious to this group--why TBs are so popular: they can be worked on! Reminds of the old days when I used to change the points and plugs, and even a water pump here and there.
