Windows has the ability to eject an optical drive by right clicking on the drive in My Computer and selecting Eject. My question is this: if one were to inadvertently do this without the media bay door being open, would the drive eject and jam itself? Or would the drive be "smart" enough to know the media pocket door isn't open (this question really applies to fully rugged (CF-27/28/29/30/31) Toughbooks only)...(I theoretically COULD try this for myself, but I would rather not do so with my awesomely refurbished Toughbook)

Been there, done that, the drive slides out and makes a thump against the door. Open the door and it slides on out. I don't make a practice of it but accidents happen and I haven't made a brick of the TB. "Yet".

No it will not hurt it, never had a jam yet.

Is it slot load or tray type. On tray type cd rom, no problem it will eject up to the door cover without any damage and when you open the cover just push it back where it belong.

My Dell XPS M1330 has a slot-load DVDRW drive in it... if I eject it with the disc blocked, it tries for about half a second, then draws the disc back in. It does this if obstructed from a distance of anywhere between 0" and approx 7/8", at which point it evidently considers the disc fully ejected and ceases to attempt to eject any further.
The drive is a Matsush!ta UJ-857G, spec page for UJ-857B is attached for reference.
