Why would you want a rubber duck type antenna? The twin antenna system blows away anything you could make unless you are using a wifi dish or cantenna system... That would be the only reason that I see for an external hook-up.
-
-
By tin antenna, I assume you mean the original Toughbook internal antenna's?
-
Sorry... That was supposed to be a "TWIN" antenna system. The CF-18/19 and the CF-29/30 all have excellent wifi antenna systems.
-
I am in CF 50 land if that matters. I guess that if Panasonic made excellent antennae for 1 series they made them for all series.

i'm having trouble connecting to different networks from my van, and, although when i'm not in the van (like in my house or my neighbor's) I get great reception, I'm curious if i should use an external antenna with my dock in my van? TB: your thoughts on the twin antenna's vs a roof mounted ariel for my astro?
I'm looking at one of those $20 8602 cards to help, but I'm not sure.
on a side note, i do have a wrt54g-tm flashed with dd-wrt running at 200mw in my house (probably why i get great reception in my neighborhood)(including in my van).
Thoughts? -
I would say that a good quality roof mounted antenna would be worth a shot.

finally opened up bottom of cf-29L that was having heating issues replacing heat dissipation rubbers(AKA head gaskets for hot rods) were not dry but saw voids in middle, this unit only had 960 hours but looked like had a hard life of being tossed around. boot up temps using cputhermometer app showed 50-60's C, now holding fast to 40 C with battery charging. changed out wifi intel to engenious plus 600mw took out intel drivers and loaded engenious drivers let ms do the rest, I'm using it now IT WORKS!, this ain't like building my first small block or my first desktop way back when, but it feels like the first time! an old dog can learn a new trick, thanks to you sages and the threads, I'll be attempting more mods and upgrades, with more studying all the threads, many thanks to the sages......Driller

I'm pretty pleased with the wifi performance of the factory card vs my old laptop. Is the EnGenius card that much stronger? I see that guy has them on the bay again.

; the EnGenius EMP-8602 Plus-S card is better!
I haven't even installed my 8602 cards in my Mk2, Mk3 and Mk5 CF-29s yet, but am looking favorably to one of the 9701s for the CF-29 in my vehicle.
-
Using the 8602 +S I get about 30% better signal over the Intel ABG, about 50% better than the stock Intel BG card and about 60% over the stock Intel B card... Which is trash anyway.... But then so is the BG card.

You guys are killing me! Every time I turn around I'm seeing another upgrade or add-on that I'm itching to get.

I was checking out their site and they have a new card coming out
EMP700: Atheros 6thG Mini-PCI Adapter
COMING SOON!
Engenius EMP700 radio card performs extreme high power and economizes the power consumption on the system platform. It can transmit the data and voice in the 700MHz frequency band which coverage the band more than 30 U.S states. It opens up an opportunity that companies want to use a less interference frequency than normal industrial band.
For outstanding performance on the extremely output power, it enables the longer transmit distance and g reater p enetration . Also, in the US, 700MHz permits higher power limitations than other unlicensed band.
With enhanced features on the ESD protection, industrial-based operating temperature, industrial-best sensitivity than normal module, MMCX connectors, and stable heating protection design, makes the module is easily to integrate into a wide range of any platform. Get EnGenius 700MHz radio, enjoy the interference free communication. -
I guess it would not be very compatible with existing routers?
-
Either they are redesigning it this weekend or something's up with the company.
I'm considering giving up on the Intel WLAN since the software is fighting me. -
-
Does anyone else see it or have the install? -

Now how about drivers? -
Sheet says it's a USB N-spec network adapter, and the frequency bands are 802.11b/g? -
TopCop1988 Toughbook Aficionado
● Form Factor: Mini-PCI type III A
"USB" comes from:
● Related Products
EUB-9701EXT (802.11n USB 2T2R)
EUB-9702 (802.11n USB 1T2R)
ESR-9710 (802.11n Gigabit Router)
These are different products "related" to the EMP-9701 card.
While the product's description is somewhat confusing, it also states:
● Standards / Compliance: IEEE802.3, IEEE802.3u, IEEE802.11b, IEEE802.11g, 802.11n 2.0
Hope this helps.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
It also states that the item is already EOL (End of Life) as of September 1, 2009. Go here to see everything. Per one website, "This card is designed for OEM, ODM and DIY systems. It is not certified for use in laptops. It may work in some laptops but we can not tell you if it will work with yours."
I found a lot of dead links to the drivers before I got bored, most likely due to the EOL. I am sure that they are out there. -

Also trimming bumpers. Seems that's my hang up. What we would do w/o this forum?
*edit* now it won't find any networks. -
Ok...How does one hack the main pani screen? I somehow did. The beautiful Centrino logo just got swapped with Pentium M. I just redid intel proset to retrace my steps to get it working.

This was from reinstalling the POOPset utility. Just put the intel back in and went restore point. Gonna turn this comp back off and try the instructions again.
-
Yes this is normal you loose the Centrino logo,Its replaced with Pentium M when you swap wi-fi cards
Remove the useless proset utility
Alex -
Had to retrace my steps on what went wrong. Now my hangup is security still. picked everyone with router and the wlan client and none work.
-
Try windows to manage your connection
Alex -
still @ it
-
Ok after creating new swear words the card randomly decided to work. 1st it work @ work now it works @ home.
-
OK I'm done bumping this thread. After all the trouble I feel it was worth it. I sat my co-workers acer next to my 29 and searched for wireless in the area. We both locked on the 2.4 and 5.0 visible ssid routers in our lobby. We also saw 2 more secure ones but mine said they both were 100% and his said 1 bar. Mine also found 7 more that his didn't and they were also showing 100%.
-
you da man!........Driller
-
how do I do this so called throttling? I cant find that option anywhere in the app
-
Basically the software only uses the amount of power that the card needs to maintain a good connection with the access point, so if you have a good signal it will automatically use less power than if you have a weak signal. Hope that helps.
-
Is there anyone willing to buy this card for me and ship it to me up here in Canada? I have asked the seller about shipping here and he won't do it. I have looked for this card up here and it's selling for $50-$60! PM me if you can help me out
-
i dont think it would cost more 25-30 tops to buy it and ship it to canada. I'll think about it.
-
Is this the same as the plus S?
-
From what I read on FleaBay, unless I am missing something, these are the 400mW whereas the +S are 600mW; therefore these are the Plus not the +S.
-
Correct. The plus is 400mw and the +S is 600mw. Still better than a stock 100 or 150mw card. and $18.99 is a good price. I got one from the last batch he had for $16.99
-
there was a windows update driver for the card they called it a
SMC Networks SMC2536W-AG2 Dualband Wireless Adapter
it gives you alot more options to control in device manager -
TopCop1988 Toughbook Aficionado
Missed that! -
Wow that was a good thing I jumped when I did. I might get this for the 72. The one the 29 came with is currently in the 72 for now.
