    Did it ever work?
    Check boot order in bios.
    1. Plug in HD
    2. Boot computer
    3. [F2]
It should show up in boot order.

Use an AC adapter to power the usb drive. The usb port, even using 2 ports, probably does not have enough power to run an external drive.
I know mine will not run an optical drive.

No AC adapter it is powered by USB or eSATA only.
I am assuming its not getting enough power.

Try it on another computer to see if it's the 29s usb ports.

Odd, my CF-18, 29, & 30 will all run my Samsung USB DVD burner and any hard drives up to 750GB in the $9-13 (on sale at Newegg) Rosewill external enclosures just fine with a single USB connection.

WD My Book does work on both USB's.
So I am assuming they don't put out enough power to use with my other drive.

I have a cheap chinese usb enclosure with a sata drive. 1/20th time, I have o unplug it and plug it back in, because the light just blinks at me and the drive wont register.
    then it's fine.
the only other problem I've had is with usb powered speakers. I got a "too much power" popup twice, and now will only power them from a wall adapter....
    FWIW.

I had it with a DVD-burner from Apple, even when routed through a powered USB-hub it wouldn't power up ob my CF-19. Bought one from LaCie and it works perfect.
The usb-ports on the Toughbooks don't seem to be very heavily powered. OTOH that might result in the much, much better battery life I'm able to achieve (even up to 9,5 hours with very light all day long use!!).
