I've come to the conclusion that my car/toughbook setup's noise is the result of a cheap head unit.

I would like to know if you (or someone you know and the intimate details of the endeavor) have modded in an FM transmitter to your toughbook or dock?
    which model transmitter?
were the guts small enough to mod in somewhere, or is it just plugged in?
expense? (ya'll should know by now, i'm a cheap bass tard)

    TIA!

I'll get back to you on this. My buddy has a NICE one that he spent like $80 on and it works GREAT. We used it with my Toughbook in his Jeep Commander all vacation 2 months ago!

    Thanks

I'd really like to say screw the FCC and get one that would transmit 100'+, so I could use my job site radio(s) to listen to real music....
But I'd get in trouble X2:
    once for the unlicensed transmitter
and again for transmitting profanity! ;)

I was thinking about doing something like this the other day... I think the easiest way would be to use the internal USB for a FM transmitter. There's a lot of options out there for USB powered FM transmitters that are relatively small... the only thing I worry about is the FM range when the transmitter is inside the case.

Maybe I'll pick up a few different ones from dealextreme and give em a try :)

I bought this. It's been better than the Belkin Tunecast II (garbage) and the really small Kensington one that uses your iPod screen to tune (very decent, great for an iPod Nano)

DealExtreme: $16.40 AllKit Cigarette Mount Holder and Charger with Full Range FM Transmitter for iPhone and iPod <-- I'm the guy who took photos of the inhards. :)

I don't know the output and whatever the makeshift antenna ERP but it's definitely more powerful than anything else I've seen on retail shelves. I'd say 10mw?

Your other option other than an aux cable is one of those FM transmitters that are inline with the FM antenna, and cut off the antenna when you play something so reception is excellent.

    InterestingFellow,
I have used one that plugs into the lighter socket of the car for a while. It takes either a USB flash drive for storage of MP3's or has a jack on the side to plug in a player, or in this case computer output. I don't know if this is the kind of transmitter you are looking for or not. I went on eBay and did a search for USB FM transmitter and quite a few of these popped up. The one problem mine had was after you selected the frequency, I'd hit a bump and lose power for a moment in the socket, it would go back to it's startup configuration. The newer ones seem to have a memory to them. I may have to update once I start hitting the road again! :p JohnP

The DealExtreme one I posted above has a rubber part on the cigarette plug to prevent it from coming out or rotating in the socket. It's pretty effective. The transmitter also saves the frequency in EEPROM I believe, since I don't remember seeing a battery, and it worked after 2 weeks of no power as I was on vacation.

Sounds like the answer to the crappy FM transmitter in my Sirius Satellite Radio.

Cool, thanks for all the input.

I am concerned about the whole ground loops thing with the 12v input, but then again, I can always just add another cig jack where my lind is.....

    Cool, and thx!
