    Hello all,

Just some information for the group:

About three weeks ago, 291 brand new, in the box Toughbook CF-31's were stolen in a warehouse burglary in the City of Yorba Linda, California (Orange County). They were awaiting delivery to their final customer. The model number of all units is:

    CF-31ACNAA1M

Some may have been upgraded with an additonal 2GB of RAM, and none had DVD/CD drives.

The investigating agency is the Brea Police Department.

In all seriousness here... that one that I bought and the guy said he over sold it the first time. Then he emailed me back and said he has it. Then emailed a 2nd time and said he had em, we paid it in full then he refunded the money and said he didn't have it again!

GAH! Anyways, I got mine from Ray from Rugged Depot so I'm all legit :) (Plus my model number is NOTHING like that one lol)

those model numbers are suspiciously similar. could these model numbers be altered easily on the cf-31's id sticker? I know that many knockoffs of other products can be almost impossible to differentiate from real to imposter. Rob , sounds like you just got accidentally lucky..........Driller

These HAVE TO BE stolen.... Hmmmm..... I hope this guy gets what he has coming to him! Unless he's a victom in a way that he bought from a guy that stole them and didn't realize. I've had that happen to me numerous times where some guy sold stolen products to me and the FBI/police showed up my door. Obviously there was nothing we could do about it :(

    This crap happens :( DAMN!

I have not seen any news articles about the CF31 theft, and I know about it because I work for the end user where the laptops were to be delivered.

Toughbooks have had Computrace available for years. Once they touch the internet, they call "home" with their current IP information which is easy enough to back trace for law enforcement.

I think so, I've sent the seller an email asking for lot pricing as i want to buy several for my company. I said 15-20 depending on price offered. Lets see what he has to say. I didn't ask any other questions as where he got them or if they had warranty etc. Lets see what he says.

Well, at first he was asking me what I was willing to pay for a large lot. So I told him I wasn't sure what a fair price would be. I told him I had a capped budget. In another email I asked about warranty, than I get an reply saying he checked with his "assistant" and the original 10+ qty is now only 2!

Of the original 10 units, it looks like there are three left ( the original listing was on a BIN )

The wording in the listing does force a smile:-

"in the shops these can sell for around £3000 with this spec, this is an absolute bargain and i wont be getting any more in after these sell" :D

Quite right if nothing is delivered. But if it is, then the other potential issue is one of 'Knowingly Receiving'. In 'Blighty' we have something called the 'Long Arm Of The Law', which in practise means the penalty for receiving is often worse than had you actually committed the original blagg.

The scenario is, you purchase an item for 1,000 that has a retail price of 3,000. At worst it's suspicious, at best it's painfully obvious something is amiss. Mr Small Time Crook(aka Ronnie Biggs)gets lifted for other offences & comes clean in an attempt to obtain a lesser sentence. In doing so, they implicate YOU in their chain of crime. YOU get Ninety day's in one of Her Majesty's Hotels & Ronnie gets a suspended sentence. Apparently, that's called justice!

Nope, that's not how it works with the major credit card issuers. If you buy something on a major CC and the product is not delivered as promised or advertised that is all you need to prove or show.

How are you to know what the seller is not on the up? There is no way you would be implicated in a crime. They might contact if they were to find the fraudulent seller for more info to build a case against them.

I see or read about this stuff all the time with my job.

Yeah, we've had a major shift in the nature and spirit of the law here in the States; everything is designed to protect the stupid from their own stupidity.

Common sense and "You really should have known better; you're an adult, for God's sake" don't enter into the equation anymore.

Of course, this shift is very well played by those who know how to abuse the system; it's how Bernanke got away with it for so long, and how the Subprime mortgage crisis was possible. Scope this latest action out, involving (yet again) BoA and Lehman Bros:

The Bank of America Mortgage Fraud Allegations (So Far) - Business - The Atlantic Wire

Jeez... with fraud like this directly perpetrated by one of the world's largest banking institutions, I wonder why I have a hard time giving a rat's ar$e about a few stolen ToughBooks.

Rightly or wrongly, I've held the view for sometime that Insurance is a form of legalised crime, regardless of what part of the world you live in, being shafted has a universal tone, which is the primary objective of insurance companies IMO

With cases such as the above hitting the news headlines & the 'Top Jockey's' shrugging their shoulders, things that appear to be of a lesser importance start to become socially acceptable

So the message is, check your insurance policy, you know your being shafted, but it's socially acceptable for your toughbook to be on a listing next week & socially acceptable for someone to buy it. Pay buy card, you've got nothing to loose, it's 'dog eat dog' & there's always somebody going to be hungrier that you.

I would say, just my 2c, but limey land uses monopoly money, so just my 10p.

I'm sorry; you miss my point. If it were a ToughBook which belonged to a PERSON, I'd be all over that like fuzzy on a sheep.

These ToughBooks belonged to a corporation, and they were stolen before they could even be delivered. As a result, they got paid for three times; once by the corporation, again by the insurance company, and a third (actually, more like 10 times over, once all is said and done) time by all the rest of us in the form of higher insurance premiums once this incident is absorbed into the insurance pool's actuarial tables.

This has been the core of my complaint about the entire direction our country is going. "A Corporation is not a person; it cannot be harmed." Some very smart people in the Supreme Court decided this in the '40s, then upheld it again in the '60s. The Corporations have been trying to tear that decision down ever since; and they've succeeded.

In this time, a Corporation enjoys legal protection far greater than that of any citizen; they can buy any law they want. It is legally allowed to defraud, steal, even forcefully take the personal property and income of an individual; it has the ability to use the law to take our money and use it against us; rigging elections and buying political favor in Congressional Offices paid for by us the taxpayer, and protected from the prying eyes of the media (The few not owned lock, stock and BullBarsh by thieves like Rupert Murduch) while being bought off by security agencies paid for with our own dollars.

They can legally kill hundreds at a time through sheer negligence and many time willful malfeasance and pay off the legal claims with insurance money drawn from a pool which we, the citizens, pay for; yet even when they are forced to pay punitive damages, their lawyers can always drag on the proceedings until such a time as they can find the right person of power to pay off; and even THAT money is written off and paid for from the above mentioned insurance pool we ALL pay for.

Meanwhile, CEOs get hundreds of millions of dollars severance for nearly destroying their company, so why should I expect even basic competency AT THEIR JOB from everybody I work with or pay for services?

The tide has turned; there is no more middle class in America. There are not "Haves" & Have-nots"; there are "Have-almost-everything-and-still-scheming-to-get-the-tiny-bit-I-don't-haves" and "Have-almost-nothings". Most of us ASPIRE to be truly middle class; and don't even get me started on the Military Industrial Complex which has already bought next year's elections.

"1984" was for optimists. "Omni Consumer Products" were a bunch of pikers. "Umbrella Corporation"? PUH-LEEZE.

We've turned a Nation that was the envy of the civilized world into a giant Mining Town, and Wal-Mart is the Company Store.

Welcome to the Corporate States of America.

    @ geeky Dwagon,

I missed your point in the first post, no misunderstanding the second.

Food for thought, the cancer that erodes your inner core is not restricted to your own shores, your corporations have become global enterprises, they are eroding other societies & it's not welcome.

I know... he says he wants Tejas to secede; I think the rest of the country should let him go for it, and good riddance. We'll see how long that dou$#puppet lasts without federal funding to balance his embezzling... err, budget. Can you believe there's a real chance this scuzzball could be a presidential candidate? Hasn't Texas done enough damage to the nation, what with 2 generations of Bush'tards and trying to force their revisionist history books on the rest of us?

In case you didn't know, most of the standard textbooks used by all public schools are printed here in TX... the producers of that material have taken it upon themselves to rewrite the history of this great nation, describing Jefferson and Franklin and Adams as charlatans while painting that nut bar Thomas Calvin, whose insanity got him literally chased out of Europe with torches and pitchforks, as a national hero.

The rest of the country's school districts are aghast; many have actually contracted with publishers overseas so they can get the correct materials. They figure they can deal with the hassle of correcting the errors caused by Engrish a lot easier than trying to unteach utter bullsheet. :err:

Mhmmmmm. Perhaps... but the clusterflop in the Gulf, that 5-month oil spill which produced as much as the EXXON Valdez every week, was perpetrated by BP - British Petroleum. We had people here, in Louisiana, circulating petitions to prevent sanctions against BP because... and I quote... "...if we them off they're going to take their business elsewhere, and they're our biggest customers." These same people who make their living from the coastal tourist trade... which BP singlehandedly destroyed by NOT providing adequate safeguards, by using wellhead materials KNOWN to be substandard (Provided by, surprise surprise, Halliburton Energy), and by NOT having a spill contingency plan ready to deploy, even though they were CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO DO SO in the charter that gave them drilling rights in our coastal waters. I don't know if I believe America invented the spiritual decadence which makes such willful acts of depravity possible, but we sure are working hard to perfect it. :mask:

Spot on, hence the use of the word "Cancer"....the influence of the Corporate States on Corporate Blighty.

It's a "Family Show" so I'll not disclose what people do with sheep in the Welsh mountains.

Dude, I strive to "Lower The Tone" on each thread I contribute too, or don't contribute too if you look at it that way.... Credit where credit's due, you win. ....and the winners prise is.....You'll be restrained in a chair that's placed in a "Gangsta Rap" recording studio for a period of no less than 4 hours. :D :D

So say's a genuine news article, but after a BBQ & copious amounts of "Golden Amber Nectar" the news article looked about as genuine as some of the sellers.... Alcohol consumption prevented the editing of my earlier post.
